Developing emotional preparedness and mental resilience through high-fidelity simulation: a ‘bridge too far’ for institutions teaching major trauma management and mass-casualty medicine?

open access: yesBMC Medical Education
Background Clinical acumen represents only part of being adequately equipped to attend a major incident. The emotive sights, sounds and smells of these dynamic environments are all-encompassing experiences, and responders must also be armed with the ...

A modeler's guide to studying the resilience of social-technical-environmental systems [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
The term 'resilience' is increasingly being used in social-technical-environmental systems sciences and particularly also in the Earth system sciences. However, the diversity of resilience concepts and a certain (sometimes intended) openness of proposed definitions can lead to misunderstandings and may impede their application to complex systems ...

Oxidation‐Driven Enhancement of Intrinsic Properties in MXene Electrodes for High‐Performance Flexible Energy Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
By employing a partial oxidation strategy, nanosized pores are introduced into MXene nanosheets. The resulting holey MXene exhibits faster ionic transport, achieving an aerial capacitance 2.5 times that of unmodified MXene electrodes, and demonstrates excellent cycling stability, retaining 91.7% of its capacitance after 10 000 cycles.

Harnessing Outer Space for Improved Electrocaloric Cooling

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A novel radiative heat sink/source‐integrated electrocaloric (R‐iEC) system combines the electrocaloric (EC) effect with a thermally conductive radiative cooler (TCRC) to address heat dissipation limitations in EC devices. Utilizing outer space as a heat sink, the system achieves up to 240 W m−2 of heat dissipation performance, making it highly ...

Hierarchically Engineered Triple‐Defensive Antifouling Coating with Well‐Regulated Structure for Enhanced Wastewater Treatment

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by shark skin, which has a hydrophilic “denticle layer” and a low surface energy “mucus layer,” a triple‐defense antifouling coating is developed. This coating features a robust hydrophilic catalytic nanoparticle layer overlaid with dispersed hydrophobic perfluoro‐silane domains, optimizing fouling resistance, release, and degradation for ...

In-poor IGZO: superior resilience to hydrogen in forming gas anneal and PBTI [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Integrating In-Ga-Zn-oxide (IGZO) channel transistors in silicon-based ecosystems requires the resilience of the channel material to hydrogen treatment. Standard IGZO, containing 40% In (metal ratio) suffers from degradation under forming gas anneal (FGA) and hydrogen (H) driven positive bias temperature instability (PBTI).
