Suppression of resistive interchange instability by external RMP

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2023
We experimentally investigate the effect of external resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) on resistive interchange MHD instability which is typically observed in the Large Helical Device. We apply the m / n = 1/1 external RMP to discharges with the m / n

Mechanism of Edge Localized Mode Mitigation by Resonant Magnetic Perturbations [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2014
A possible mechanism of edge localized modes (ELMs) mitigation by resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) is proposed based on the results of nonlinear resistive magnetohydrodynamic modeling using the jorek code, realistic JET-like plasma parameters and an RMP spectrum of JET error-field correction coils (EFCC) with a main toroidal number n=2 were used ...

Impact of a resonant magnetic perturbation field on impurity radiation, divertor footprint, and core plasma transport in attached and detached plasmas in the Large Helical Device

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2019
The effects of resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) field on impurity radiation, divertor footprint distribution, and core plasma transport are investigated in the detachment discharges of the Large Helical Device (LHD).

Suppression of Runaway Electrons by Resonant Magnetic Perturbations in TEXTOR Disruptions [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2008
The generation of runaway electrons in the international fusion experiment ITER disruptions can lead to severe damage at plasma facing components. Massive gas injection might inhibit the generation process, but the amount of gas needed can affect, e.g., vacuum systems.

Resonant mode effects on rotation braking induced by n = 1 resonant magnetic perturbations in the EAST tokamak

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2023
The spectrum effects on toroidal rotation braking, induced by n  = 1 resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) in the discharges with $q_{95} = 4.1$ and $q_{95} = 5.1$ , are studied in the EAST tokamak.

Understanding the effect resonant magnetic perturbations have on ELMs [PDF]

open access: yesPlasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 2013
All current estimations of the energy released by type I ELMs indicate that, in order to ensure an adequate lifetime of the divertor targets on ITER, a mechanism is required to decrease the amount of energy released by an ELM, or to eliminate ELMs altogether.

Optimization of 3D controlled ELM-free state with recovered global confinement for KSTAR with n = 1 resonant magnetic field perturbation

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2021
Mitigation of deleterious heat flux from edge-localized modes (ELMs) on fusion reactors is often attempted with 3D perturbations of the confining magnetic fields.

ELM mitigation via rotating resonant magnetic perturbations on MAST [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Nuclear Materials, 2015
The application of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) produces splitting of the divertor strike point due to the interaction of the RMP field and the plasma field. The application of a rotating RMP field causes the strike point splitting to rotate, distributing the particle and heat flux evenly over the divertor.

Test of the ITER-like resonant magnetic perturbation configurations for edge-localized mode crash suppression on KSTAR

open access: yesNuclear Fusion, 2019
KSTAR has demonstrated divertor heat flux broadening during edge-localized mode (ELM) crash suppression using ITER-like three-row resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) for the first time.

Pressure-driven amplification and penetration of resonant magnetic perturbations [PDF]

open access: yesPhysics of Plasmas, 2016
We show that a resonant magnetic perturbation applied to the boundary of an ideal plasma screw-pinch equilibrium with nested surfaces can penetrate inside the resonant surface and into the core. The response is significantly amplified with increasing plasma pressure.
