Could photoperiodic responses have evolved before the emergence of circadian clocks?

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 248, Issue 6, Page 2707-2713, December 2025.
Summary Plants use photoperiod (i.e. day length) as a seasonal cue for timing when to flower. This ability, known as photoperiodism, also underlies phenomena such as migration, seasonal reproduction, and hibernation in animals. Because a circadian (daily) clock underlies the day/night length timing mechanism in most organisms, it has been generally ...

Knowledge from non‐English‐language studies broadens contributions to conservation policy and helps to tackle bias in biodiversity data

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 9, Page 2148-2162, September 2025.
Collecting data from local sources markedly further strengthens global biodiversity databases by adding species not previously included in international datasets. Furthermore, the addition of these data helps to understand spatial and temporal biases that potentially influence abundance trends at both national and global levels.

Do public works programmes foster climate resilience? Conceptual framework and review of empirical evidence

open access: yesInternational Social Security Review, Volume 78, Issue 2-3, Page 145-171, April-September 2025.
Abstract Public works programmes (PWPs) are pervasively used to tackle poverty and unemployment, and to build infrastructure and skills in low‐ and middle‐income countries. While their impacts on poverty, food security and labour outcomes have been widely documented, there is little research focusing on the role of PWPs in supporting household climate ...
