Respiratory muscle strength and endurance should be assessed when dyspnea, respiratory failure, or poor performance on routine pulmonary function tests are unexplained. Respiratory muscle strength can be measured non-invasively from maximal mouth pressures, but measurement of transdiaphragmatic pressure refines the assessment.
