Automated Polysomnography Analysis for Detection of Non-Apneic and Non-Hypopneic Arousals using Feature Engineering and a Bidirectional LSTM Network [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Objective: The aim of this study is to develop an automated classification algorithm for polysomnography (PSG) recordings to detect non-apneic and non-hypopneic arousals. Our particular focus is on detecting the respiratory effort-related arousals (RERAs) which are very subtle respiratory events that do not meet the criteria for apnea or hypopnea, and ...

Tailored 3D Lattice Microstructures for Enhanced Functionality in Blood‐Gas Exchange

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Common hollow fiber structures are associated with inhomogeneous flow, leading to many complications in the medical application of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Using locally adapted lattice structures, the overall flow distribution can be manipulated.

Streamlining of a synthetic co‐culture towards an individually controllable one‐pot process for polyhydroxyalkanoate production from light and CO2

open access: yesEngineering in Life Sciences, Volume 23, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
Abstract Rationally designed synthetic microbial consortia carry a vast potential for biotechnological applications. The application of such a consortium in a bioprocess, however, requires tight and individual controllability of the involved microbes.

A Touch Enabled Hemodynamic and Metabolic Monitor

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work presents a touch‐based hybrid platform for simultaneous monitoring of vital signs and sweat metabolites. With a simple tri‐finger touch of 4–6 min, users can concurrently get to know their glucose, uric acid, cortisol levels from fingertip sweat, along with blood pressure and heart rate.

Self‐powered virtual olfactory generation system based on bionic fibrous membrane and electrostatic field accelerated evaporation

open access: yesEcoMat, Volume 5, Issue 2, February 2023., 2023
In this paper, a self‐powered virtual olfactory generation system is fabricated based on an ultrafast voltage‐elevation triboelectric nanogenerator. This system has two operation chambers, where the electrospray devices are in the front chamber and the electrostatic‐field accelerated evaporation process is occurred in the back.

Benefit from Biomass Boiler Emissions to Increase Greenhouse CO2 Levels for Optimal Growth and Yield in Tomato, Cucumber, and Strawberry

open access: yesAdvanced Energy and Sustainability Research, EarlyView.
Using CO2‐rich polluting gases in greenhouse plant cultivation has proven to be a promising technique for stimulating plants while reducing emissions to the atmosphere. The use of an experimental biofilter proves to be effective in retaining most of the toxic particles. The alteration of physiological and metabolic parameters shows an adaptation of the

A companion to the preclinical common data elements and case report forms for in vivo rodent neuroimaging: A report of the TASK3‐WG3 Neuroimaging Working Group of the ILAE/AES Joint Translational Task Force

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView., 2022
Abstract The International League Against Epilepsy/American Epilepsy Society (ILAE/AES) Joint Translational Task Force established the TASK3 working groups to create common data elements (CDEs) for various aspects of preclinical epilepsy research studies, which could help improve the standardization of experimental designs.

Daily rhythms in metabolic and locomotor behaviour of prematurely ageing PolgA mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio
Ageing is an inherent and intricate biological process that takes place in living organisms as time progresses. It involves the decline of multiple physiological functions, leading to body structure and overall performance modifications.

Respiratory sympathetic modulation is augmented in chronic kidney disease [PDF]

open access: yesRespiratory Physiology and Neurobiology, Elsevier, In press, 2019
Respiratory modulation of sympathetic nerve activity (respSNA) was studied in a hypertensive rodent model of chronic kidney disease (CKD) using Lewis Polycystic Kidney (LPK) rats and Lewis controls. In adult animals under in vivo anaesthetised conditions (n=8-10/strain), respiratory modulation of splanchnic and renal nerve activity was compared under ...

Frontiers in Nondrug Treatment of Sarcopenia: A Review of Pathological Mechanisms and the Latest Treatment Strategies

open access: yesAGING MEDICINE, EarlyView.
This article mainly introduces the pathologic process of sarcopenia and the recent progress in diagnosis and treatment, especially the nondrug treatment. ABSTRACT Sarcopenia refers to the progressive decline and wasting of skeletal muscle function, typically linked to aging or as a secondary effect of various conditions, including systemic inflammation,
