The Injurious Effects of Elevated or Nonelevated Respiratory Rate during Mechanical Ventilation
American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2019Respiratory rate is one of the key variables that is set and monitored during mechanical ventilation. As part of increasing efforts to optimize mechanical ventilation, it is prudent to expand understanding of the potential harmful effects of not only ...

Respiratory rates in emergency department patients
The Journal of Emergency Medicine, 1989The respiratory rate is a sensitive and nonspecific indicator of respiratory dysfunction. Establishing a "normal" respiratory rate has mainly been arbitrary. This study evaluated "normal" respiratory rates in 110 emergency department patients. The mean respiratory rate was 20.1 (+/- 4.0).

Respiratory rate is a routine vital sign recorded on all patients, in addition to pulse rate, blood pressure, and temperature. Alveolar ventilation, a product of respiratory rate and tidal volume, is very tightly controlled by receptors in the respiratory center that is found in the medulla.

Heart rate variability in subjects with different respiratory rates
Human Physiology, 2006The variability of the cardiac rhythm was studied in males with different initial respiratory rates. At rest and during voluntarily controlled breathing, subjects with medium respiratory rates were found to have a less variable heart rate than their counterparts with low or high respiratory rates.

Respiratory Rate as a Determinant of Optimal Pacing Rate

Respiratory rate on exercise measured by nanoparticle-based humidity sensor
Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2019In this study, we show the measurement of respiratory rate on exercise using a nanoparticle-based humidity sensor. A portable respiratory rate sensor is comprised of a colloidal silica nanoparticle-based humidity sensor chip.

Multiparameter Respiratory Rate Estimation From the Photoplethysmogram
IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 2013We present a novel method for estimating respiratory rate in real time from the photoplethysmogram (PPG) obtained from pulse oximetry. Three respiratory-induced variations (frequency, intensity, and amplitude) are extracted from the PPG using the Incremental-Merge Segmentation algorithm.
