Undiagnosed Respiratory Viruses in Children
Pediatrics, 2008OBJECTIVE. An estimated 12 to 32 million upper respiratory infections occur in young children each year. In addition, 20% to 53% of infants will have ≥1 episode of lower respiratory infection in the first year of life. The current methods of diagnosing respiratory viruses are limited in scope and sensitivity.

Immunology of Respiratory Viruses
1982More than 80% of acute respiratory infections are caused by viruses. These viruses are wide in diversity and distribution (Table 1). Respiratory viruses are highly infectious and are easily spread in the community. At the present time, immunity derived from previous exposure is the only effective means by which to stop the spread of these agents.
