In the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early part of the twentieth century, Friedrich Nietzsche formulated, and Max Scheler further developed, the concept of ressentiment. Nietzsche linked this emotion with the rise of Christian morality, while Scheler linked it primarily with the formation of the bourgeois ethos in Western Europe.

In this paper I apply Friedrich Nietzsche’s critique of European morality to the Western colonial context. I specifically focus attention on his notions of ressentiment and slave morality, and how his critique implicates these as being exported and imposed upon the people Western powers colonized.

This Chapter explores psychoanalytic renditions of the concept of envy as an emotion. The term ‘envy’ is used to mean many different things in everyday language but in psychoanalysis its meaning is far more specific — envy is an expression, projection and deflection of Thanatos — the death drive.
