River width and depth as key factors of diurnal activity energy expenditure allocation for wintering Spot-billed Ducks in the Xin'an River Basin

open access: yesAvian Research
Rivers are important habitats for wintering waterbirds. However, they are easily influenced by natural and human activities. An important approach for waterbirds to adapt to habitats is adjusting the activity time and energy expenditure allocation of ...

Sports Nutrition - Current Recommendations

open access: yesDeutsche Zeitschrift für Sportmedizin, 2020
Athletes expend greater amounts of energy as a result of their training. However, these amounts vary during the competition year and are influenced by such factors as the training period and intensity.Measuring energy expenditure is a complex process ...

Exciton Radiative Lifetimes in Hexagonal Diamond Ge and SixGe1–x Alloys

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Strong room‐temperature photoluminescence reported in hexagonal Ge conflicts with theory predicting a nearly dark band edge. First‐principles calculations of excitonic radiative lifetimes fill a key gap in this debate, showing that pristine hexagonal Ge remains intrinsically weakly emissive, while Si alloying only modestly shortens the lifetime and ...

Resting energy expenditure is not influenced by classical music [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Negative Results in BioMedicine, 2005
Abstract Obesity shows an increasing prevalence worldwide and a decrease in energy expenditure has been suggested to be one of the risk factors for developing obesity. An increase in resting energy expenditure would have a great impact on total energy expenditure.

The cystic fibrosis gene and resting energy expenditure

open access: yes, 1991
To determine whether the increase in resting energy expenditure in cystic fibrosis is associated with the primary genetic defect (ΔF508) or with declining pulmonary function, or both, we tested resting every energy expenditure prospectively in 32 male ...

Multiobjective Codesign Optimization of a Planar Pneumatic Artificial Muscle‐Based Snake‐Like Robot for Enhanced Agility and Energy Efficiency

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A codesign multiobjective optimization framework was developed to enhance the morphology and controller of a snake‐like robot driven by artificial muscles. It improved planar locomotion, agility, and power efficiency. The approach optimized link geometry and controller gains, revealing that shorter muscles near joints and longer linkages maximize ...

A Prediction Equation to Assess Resting Energy Expenditure in Japanese Patients with COPD

open access: yes, 2020
Background: Medical nutrition therapy is important in the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Determination of resting energy expenditure is essential to define therapeutic goals for medical nutrition.

Multimodal Locomotion in Insect‐Inspired Microrobots: A Review of Strategies for Aerial, Surface, Aquatic, and Interfacial Motion

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This review identifies key design considerations for insect‐inspired microrobots capable of multimodal locomotion. To draw inspiration, biological and robotic strategies for moving in air, on water surfaces, and underwater are examined, along with approaches for crossing the air–water interface.

Resting energy expenditure measured longitudinally following hip fracture compared to predictive equations: is an injury adjustment required? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The present study measuring resting energy expenditure (REE; kJ/d) longitudinally using indirect calorimetry in six elderly women aged ≥70 years following surgery for hip fracture, describes changes over time (days 10, 42 and 84 post-injury) and compares

Introducing PNEUMA: A Hybrid Soft Pneumatic Fabric Bidirectional Actuation Module for Wearable Robotics

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This study presents a soft pneumatic fabric bidirectional actuation module (PNEUMA) capable of generating high torque in both bending directions within a single integrated architecture. PNEUMA achieves up to 50 Nm with reduced inflation volume and a lightweight design.
