Abstract The 1998 Adult Dental Health Survey documented an increase in the population who are retaining their teeth. Eighty-seven per cent of the population was dentate compared to 68 per cent in 1968. It is projected that 96 per cent of the population will be dentate by 2028 (Nuttall et al.2001).
