Appearance of Restricted Shock Separation in Rocket Nozzles

open access: closedJournal of Propulsion and Power, 2002
Uncontrolled flow separation in nozzles of rocket engines is not desired because it can lead to dangerous lateral forces. Different origins for side loads were identified in the past. Meanwhile, it is proven that in thrust-optimized or parabolic nozzles, a major side load occurs as a result of the transition of separation pattern from free shock ...

Restricted Shock Separation in Rocket Nozzles

open access: closedJournal of Propulsion and Power, 2000
In overexpanded rocket nozzles the e ow separates from the nozzle wall at a certain pressure ratio of wall pressure to ambient pressure. Flow separation and its theoretical prediction have been the subject of several experimental and theoretical studies in the past decades.

Study of Restricted Shock Separation Phenomena in a Thrust Optimized Parabolic Nozzle

open access: closedJournal of Propulsion and Power, 2009
An experimental investigation has been carried out on a subscale thrust optimized parabolic nozzle (area ratio of 30) to study the flow characteristics prevalent during a partially formed restricted shock separation and a fully formed restricted shock separation condition, each of which are observed to be discrete in nature.

Surface flow studies of restricted shock separation in a thrust optimized parabolic nozzle

open access: closedShock Waves, 2009
In this paper, surface flow features such as length of separation region and separation bubble are studied during restricted shock separation condition in a thrust optimized parabolic nozzle. It is found that peaks in the variation of these surface flow features are directly related to beginning of conditions for flow transition suggesting changes in ...

Numerical Study of Restricted Shock Separation in a Compressed Truncated Perfect Nozzle

open access: closedAIAA Journal, 2006
The origin of the transition of the flow structure between free shock separation and restricted shock separation in a compressed truncated perfect nozzle is studied. A three-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes solver is used to capture the nonaxisymmetric unsteady flow structure inside the nozzle.

Experimental Investigations of Flow Restricted Shock Separation in High-Area-Ratio Nozzle with Exit Cone

open access: closed45th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit, 2009
Appearance of so-called restricted shock(-induced) flow separation (RSS) in nozzle has been revealed experimentally in a high-area-ratio model nozzle with a truncated ideal contour (TIC) and a back cone at its exit for facilitating liquid rocket engines (LRE) ground tests with such nozzles.

Suppressing Restricted Shock Separation in Thrust-Optimized Rocket Nozzles Using Contour Geometry

open access: closed51st AIAA/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference, 2015
Restricted shock separation (RSS) is an undesirable flow phenomenon that occurs in thrust-optimized nozzles during the start-up and shut down of the engine. To determine if the nozzle geometry can be used to suppress RSS in rocket nozzles, a set of five equivalent thrust-optimized nozzle contours were generated using an arc-based design method ...
