Seasonal Variability of Resuspension
Particulate air pollution in cities is caused by a variety of sources. One of the less-studied contributors is wind-induced particle resuspension. As the wind speed increases, particles are removed from surfaces. These particles cause an increase in the total concentration in the air.

Dust resuspension without saltation [PDF]
Wind resuspension (or entrainment) provides a source of dust and contaminants for the atmosphere. Conventional wind erosion models parameterize dust resuspension flux with a threshold velocity or with a horizontal abrasion flux; in the absence of abrasion the models assume dust flux is transient only. Our experiments with an uncrusted, fine material at

Human Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in the Urban Road Dust of Zhengzhou Metropolis, China
The goal of this research is to assess hazardous heavy metal levels in PM2.5 fractioned road dust in order to quantify the risk of inhalation and potential health effects. To accomplish this, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS) was used

Shipboard measurements of sediment stability using a small annular flume—Core Mini Flume (CMF) [PDF]
Estimates of bed stability in coastal environments are essential to physical, biological, and chemical investigations of cohesive sediments. The Core Mini Flume (CMF), a 200 mm diameter annular flume has been designed to undertake sediment stability ...

Summer Distribution of Total Suspended Matter Across the Baltic Sea
There are three optical in-water components that, besides water itself, govern the under-water light field: phytoplankton, total suspended matter (TSM), and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM). In essence, it is the spectral absorption and scattering

Input of particulate heavy metals from rivers and associated sedimentary deposits on the Gulf of Lion continental shelf [PDF]
Fluxes of the heavy metals chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) delivered by rivers to the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean Sea) were estimated over a three year study of the River Rhone and its ...

Assessing Unequal Airborne Exposure to Lead Associated With Race in the USA
Recent research applied the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Chemical Speciation Network and Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments monitoring stations and observed that mean concentrations of atmospheric lead (Pb) in ...

X-ray radiography of viscous resuspension [PDF]
We use X-ray imaging to study viscous resuspension. In a Taylor-Couette geometry, we shear an initially settled layer of spherical glass particles immersed in a Newtonian fluid and measure the local volume fraction profiles. In this configuration, the steady-state profiles are simply related to the normal viscosity defined in the framework of the ...

Viscous resuspension of droplets [PDF]
Using absorbance measurements through a Couette cell containing an emulsion of buoyant droplets, volume fraction profiles are measured at various shear rates. These viscous resuspension experiments allow a direct determination of the normal stress in the vorticity direction in connection with the suspension balance model that has been developed for ...
