Retinal detachment (RD) occurs when the neurosensory retina, the neurovascular tissue responsible for phototransduction, is separated from the underlying retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Given the importance of the RPE for optimal retinal function, RD invariably leads to decreased vision.

Retinal Dialyses and Retinal Detachment
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1968The data from 131 eyes operated upon by one of us (W.S.H.) for retinal detachment due to dialysis in a consecutive series of 1,352 eyes operated for retinal detachment were analyzed. Dialyses were found to be a common cause (10%) of all retinal detachment and are the most common cause (50%) of retinal detachments in children and young adults.
