Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is the most common form of retinal detachment, where a retinal "break" allows the ingress of fluid from the vitreous cavity to the subretinal space, resulting in retinal separation. It occurs in about 1 in 10,000 people a year.We conducted a systematic review and aimed to answer the following clinical questions ...

Pseudophakic Retinal Detachments
Retina, 1985Primary scleral buckling procedures were performed for rhegmatogenous retinal detachments in a consecutive series of 179 pseudophakic eyes. Most cases involved eyes in which extracapsular surgery had been combined with iridocapsular implants or posterior chamber lenses or in which iris-fixation IOLs were placed following intracapsular surgery.

RETINAL DETACHMENT AND APHAKIA [PDF]
DURING 1948 and 1949, 387 cases of detachment were referred to the Retina Service of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary for treatment. Cases of aphakia numbered 88, or 23 per cent. In eight cases there were bilateral aphakia and detachment. The purpose of this paper is to analyze our findings and discuss our results in cases of detachment and ...

The incidence of aphakia in our series of retinal detachment is 14.82%. The incidence of retinal detachment in aphakia is 2.74%. The use of alpha-chymotrypsin does not influence this incidence. In our own patients, we did not find a sex predominance, although there was a predominance of the male sex in the referred group.

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses retinal detachment (RD), which is a separation of the sensory retina from the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) by subretinal fluid (SRF). The chapter presents the classification of RD. Rhegmatogenous RD is caused by the interplay between vitreoretinal traction and a weakness in the peripheral retina—most ...

Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment
The Physician and Sportsmedicine, 2009Patients often present after trauma with symptoms of vision loss or loss of a field of vision from a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). This study aims to equip the health care provider with knowledge on the recognition, evaluation, and management of RRD to improve communication between the patient and consultant.

Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment
2012Strictly speaking, ‘retinal detachment’ is a misnomer. The term denotes separation of the neuroepithelium from the pigment epithelium (rather than detachment of the retina, which consists of the neuroepithelium and the RPE, from the choroid) and therefore implies re-establishment of the space between the original layers of the embryonic optic cup.

Surgery for Retinal Detachment
Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, 1997Retinal detachment surgery in human patients is currently 90% successful, with most detachments amenable to treatment by scleral buckling procedures. The main obstacle to achieving comparable results in veterinary patients is the active nature of our patients during the postoperative convalescent period.
