Gene therapy for inherited retinal diseases: progress and possibilities
Clinical and experimental optometry, 2021Inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) comprise a heterogeneous group of genetic disorders affecting the retina. Caused by mutations in over 300 genes, IRDs result in visual impairment due to dysfunction and degeneration of photoreceptors, retinal pigment ...

The eye can be affected by obstructive phenomena within large vessels, such as the corotid arteries, as well as in the ophthalmic artery, central retinal artery, and branch retinal arteries. The visual impairment seen with central retinal vein obstruction usually occurs over a period of days to weeks, and although vision improves spontaneously in some ...

This article reports recent advances in the diagnosis, genetic analysis, and treatment of hereditary retinal disease.Clinicians and scientists continue to reveal the relationship between phenotype and genotype in hereditary retinal diseases. Persistent investigation and progressive technology are advancing the efficiency of mutation discovery.

The phenotypic presentation of retinal diseases is typically underpinned by the presence of genetic variation represented by either polymorphic changes, mutations, copy number variations or epigenetic changes. Retinal dystrophies can broadly be divided into two forms, either monogenic (single-gene) or complex (multifactorial) diseases.

Crohn's Disease and Retinal Vascular Disease
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1990Patients with Crohn's disease may manifest extraintestinal findings including ocular involvement. We treated two patients with Crohn's disease who manifested retinal vascular disease that may have been related to the immune nature of the underlying disease or possibly to changes in the vasculature or coagulation system.
