Acute Multifocal Hemorrhagic Retinal Vasculitis

The authors present a series of seven patients with acute visual loss associated with mild anterior uveitis, multifocal retinal vasculitis, retinal capillary nonperfusion, retinal hemorrhage, disc swelling, and vitreitis. Oral prednisone was of some benefit in these patients and oral acyclovir was generally ineffective.

Retinal Hemorrhage Associated with Thrombasthenia

A healthy 20-year-old man presented with a spontaneous unilateral retinal hemorrhage. Because of a history of easy bruisability, we obtained hematologic studies and diagnosed thrombasthenia, a hereditary hemorrhagic disorder. The association of retinal hemorrhage and thrombasthenia is rare.

Altitude, Diarrhea, and Retinal Hemorrhages

To the Editor.— Retinal hemorrhages have been described in a patient, the wife of a physician from Arizona, in QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS (239:1208, 1978). The patient had not been fully acclimatized even to moderate altitudes. The severe diarrhea and attendant cramping that lasted one week certainly could have produced occasional Valsalva strains.
