Recent research into the relationship between retinal venous occlusion and general vascular disorders has shown that retinal venous occlusion seems to be related only to systemic hypertension. The role of systemic hemorrheologic parameters in the pathophysiology of venous occlusion is a controversial one.

Anomalies of the Retinal Veins and Their Incidence

Nonaneurysmal anomalies of the retinal veins were studied in 1,400 consecutive locally and systemically healthy individuals whose ages ranged from eight to 66 years. The anomalies included veno-venous crossing, triconfluence, congenital dilatation, prepapillary loop, anomalous macular veins, and retinociliary vein.

We used a pars plana approach to experimentally induce retinal vein occlusions (RVO) in cats by the application of electric energy near the veins at the optic nerve head. This experimental model was utilized to study the natural evolution of thrombosis in the cilioretinal veins, which are located near the lamina cribrosa in the cat.
