The use of pneumatic cylinders with a return spring to compensate for balance losses in mechanical regenerative drives for reciprocating movements [PDF]

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2019
Mechanical spring drives with energy recovery are designed to produce return-rotational movements in various technological equipment and reduce energy costs by several times compared with traditional electromechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic drives. The

Energy-loss return gate via liquid dielectric polarization [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
AbstractThere has been much research on renewable energy-harvesting techniques. However, owing to increasing energy demands, significant energy-related issues remain to be solved. Efforts aimed at reducing the amount of energy loss in electric/electronic systems are essential for reducing energy consumption and protecting the environment.

Straw return decreases N surface runoff losses in croplands: Evidence from a global meta-analysis

open access: yesAgricultural Water Management
Agricultural non-point source pollution, caused by Nitrogen (N) surface runoff losses, threatens green development and rural environmental quality. Straw return could reduce N losses by improving soil structure and N retention.

Process‐Based Flood Risk Assessment for Germany

open access: yesEarth's Future, 2021
Large‐scale flood risk assessments are crucial for decision making, especially with respect to new flood defense schemes, adaptation planning and estimating insurance premiums. We apply the process‐based Regional Flood Model (RFM) to simulate a 5000‐year

Modelling Financial Risk in the South African Stock Market: An Application of the Generalised Extreme Value Distribution (GEVD)

open access: yesEconometric Research in Finance
This study analyses the return characteristics of the South African Industrial Index (J520) and South African Financial Index (J580) using the Generalized Extreme Value Distribution (GEVD) to estimate return levels, Value-at-Risk (VaR) and Expected ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Crucial parameters for precise copy number variation detection in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded solid cancer samples

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that copy number variations (CNVs) can be reliably detected in formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded (FFPE) solid cancer samples using ultra‐low‐pass whole‐genome sequencing, provided that key (pre)‐analytical parameters are optimized.

Establishment of a humanized patient‐derived xenograft mouse model of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer for preclinical evaluation of combination immunotherapy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We have established a humanized orthotopic patient‐derived xenograft (Hu‐oPDX) mouse model of high‐grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) that recapitulates human tumor–immune interactions. Using combined anti‐PD‐L1/anti‐CD73 immunotherapy, we demonstrate the model's improved biological relevance and enhanced translational value for preclinical ...

Deciphering transcriptional plasticity in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma reveals alterations in sensory neuron innervation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pancreatic sensory neurons innervating healthy and PDAC tissue were retrogradely labeled and profiled by single‐cell RNA sequencing. Tumor‐associated innervation showed a dominant neurofilament‐positive subtype, altered mitochondrial gene signatures, and reduced non‐peptidergic neurons.

High-resolution refinement of a storm loss model and estimation of return periods of loss-intensive storms over Germany [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, 2011
A refined model for the calculation of storm losses is presented, making use of high-resolution insurance loss records for Germany and allowing loss estimates on a spatial level of administrative districts and for single storm events.
