Understanding the effect of seams on the aerodynamics of an association football [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The aerodynamic properties of an association football were measured using a wind tunnel arrangement. A third scale model of a generic football (with seams) was used in addition to a 'mini-football'.

Effective Stability in Reversible Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
In this paper we present a procedure to put in normal form a nearly-integrable reversible system, not necessarily a Hamiltonian system. Furthermore, non-resonant stability estimates are obtained. As an application we discuss the case of $n$ harmonic oscillators with frequencies satisfying Diophantine conditions.

Reverse Doppler effect in backward spin waves scattered on acoustic waves

open access: yes, 2009
We report on the observation of reverse Doppler effect in backward spin waves reflected off of surface acoustic waves. The spin waves are excited in a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film. Simultaneously, acoustic waves are also generated.

Trusted Noise in Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution: a Threat and a Defense

open access: yes, 2016
We address the role of the phase-insensitive trusted preparation and detection noise in the security of a continuous-variable quantum key distribution, considering the Gaussian protocols on the basis of coherent and squeezed states and studying them in ...

Reversible Effects as Inverse Arrows

open access: yesElectronic Notes in Theoretical Computer Science, 2018
Reversible computing models settings in which all processes can be reversed. Applications include low-power computing, quantum computing, and robotics. It is unclear how to represent side-effects in this setting, because conventional methods need not respect reversibility.

Patient‐Level Barriers and Facilitators to Inpatient Physical Therapy in Adolescents and Young Adults With a Hematological Malignancy: A Qualitative Study

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Despite their increased risk for functional impairment resulting from cancer and its treatments, few adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with a hematological malignancy receive the recommended or therapeutic dose of exercise per week during inpatient hospitalizations.

Global properties of natural scenes shape local properties of human edge detectors

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2011
Visual cortex analyzes images by first extracting relevant details (e.g. edges) via a large array of specialized detectors. The resulting edge map is then relayed to a processing pipeline, the final goal of which is to attribute meaning to the scene.

A Comparative Study of Cerebral Oxygenation During Exercise in Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Cognitive impairment and exercise intolerance are common in dialysis patients. Cerebral perfusion and oxygenation play a major role in both cognitive function and exercise execution; HD session per se aggravates cerebral ischemia in this population. This study aimed to compare cerebral oxygenation and perfusion at rest and in mild

Treatment effects of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty – a simple method to measure outcomes at 6, 12, 24 and 60 months for each patient

open access: yesBMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 2020
Background Although shoulder arthroplasty is less common than knee or hip arthroplasty, the number of procedures being performed is increasing rapidly. The treatment effect is a simple method to measure outcome of joint replacement.
