Desalination by Osmosis-Reverse Osmosis Couple
Science, 1968Water is separated from brines by a semipermeable membrane. Water flows by osmosis across the membrane into a sealed chamber where it creates pressure. This pressure is transmitted by a water-immiscible liquid piston to a second chamber where it effects reverse osmosis. Water-removal rates are calculated.

Abstract The combination of Forward Osmosis (FO) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) was evaluated for seawater desalination. RO process was suggested for the draw solution regeneration because of its high efficiency and applicability for a wide range of ionic solution treatments. Two different salts, NaCl and MgCl2, were used as a draw solution.

Concentration of antibiotics by reverse osmosis
Biotechnology and Bioengineering, 1977AbstractReverse osmosis is shown to be a viable process for the concentration of highly labile antibiotic solutions. Mathematical n10deJs of antibiotic inactivation by chemical and biological contamination are proposed and correlated with experimental data. Procedures for obtaining high antibiotic recoveries are discussed.
