THE EFFECT OF VERY HIGH HYDRAULIC PRESSURE ON THE PERMEABILITY AND SALT REJECTION OF REVERSE OSMOSIS MEMBRANES [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We employ a stirred-cell reverse osmosis setup to demonstrate that a seawater reverse osmosis membrane can maintain excellent salt rejection at pressures as high as 172 bar. However, we also demonstrate a very significant drop in membrane permeability at

Comparison of fouling propensity between reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, and membrane distillation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Resistance to fouling is often cited as an advantage of emerging desalination technologies such as forward osmosis and membrane distillation over the widely-used reverse osmosis process.

MagPiezo: A Magnetogenetic Platform for Remote Activation of Endogenous Piezo1 Channels in Endothelial Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
MagPiezo enables wireless activation of endogenous Piezo1 channels without genetic modification using 19 nm magnetic nanoparticles and low‐intensity magnetic fields. It generates torque forces at the piconewton scale to trigger mechanotransduction in endothelial cells, standing as a novel platform to interrogate and manipulate Piezo1 activity in vitro.

The aerobic treatment of reverse osmosis permeate for reuse : a thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Technology in Environmental Engineering [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
The reduction of effluent streams and the demand for freshwater intake in the dairy industry, may be accomplished by the segregation and reuse of streams that can be readily treated.

CaSO4 solubility in water–ethanol mixtures in the presence of sodium chloride at 25 °C. Application to a reverse osmosis process [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Nowadays, the most common way to desalinate seawater is by reverse osmosis. As the degree of conversion during this process increases more freshwater is recovered from the feedwater. As a result, the salt concentration in the feed increases up to a point

Robust Polymer Hydrogels Improve Electric‐Fish‐Inspired Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Electric‐fish‐inspired hydrogel batteries based on ion‐concentration gradients offer an attractive route to soft power sources; however, the poor mechanical properties of existing hydrogels limit device assembly and performance. Here, we report poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate hydrogels that enable ion‐gradient batteries composed of
