Femoral component internal rotation in functionally aligned robotic‐assisted total knee arthroplasty does not impair functional outcomes

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Femoral component internal rotation tightens the medial flexion gap and medialises femoral trochlea position, thus influencing patellofemoral tracking and function. Therefore, one of the tenets of mechanically aligned total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been to avoid femoral component internal rotation relative to the transepicondylar ...

The influence of femoral head size following total hip replacement and hip resurfacing on hip biomechanics during walking, stair use and sit-to-stand

open access: yes
Due to geometrical features, it is claimed that larger femoral heads in total hip replacement (THR) are superior in achieving normal biomechanics than smaller ones; and that hip resurfacing (RSF) is superior to THR. This has not been conclusively proven.

Patients with obesity have a higher risk of periprosthetic joint infection and more frequent polymicrobial infections after knee arthroplasty: A nationwide register‐based study from Denmark

open access: yesKnee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose To compare the 2‐year incidence of (1) revision due to periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) and (2) all‐cause revision after primary knee arthroplasty (KA) in patients with/without obesity and to compare the microbial profiles in early (≤ 90 days) and late (91–730 days) PJI.

Liver Disease Increases the Risk of Postoperative Complications in Patients Undergoing Aseptic Revision Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty

open access: yesArthroplasty Today
Background: Due to the multiorgan effects of liver disease, surgical patients with liver disease have an increased risk of perioperative complications. With revision total hip and knee arthroplasty surgeries increasing, it is important to determine the ...

Five Year Follow-up of One Stage Bilateral Total Hip Arthroplasty [PDF]

open access: yesMalaysian Orthopaedic Journal, 2007
We report on the medium term outcome of five patients (ten hips) who underwent one stage bilateral total hip arthroplasty. Both Harris Hip Scores and Oxford Hip Scores improved postoperatively as did range of motion. There was no radiographic evidence of

Profunda Femoris Pseudoaneurysm following Total Hip Arthroplasty Revision

open access: yesCase Reports in Orthopedics, 2015
Vascular injuries following total hip arthroplasty (THA) are very rare, with pseudoaneurysm being a small subset. We report a case of profunda femoris artery (PFA) pseudoaneurysm in a 61-year-old male following a posterior approach revision left THA ...

Increasing Obesity Severity Is Associated With Less Surgical Care in the United States

open access: yesObesity, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Approximately 41% of the US population has obesity, though the prevalence of the highest BMI populations (e.g., ≥ 60 kg/m2) is increasing most rapidly. Given the association between obesity and surgical disease burden, we hypothesized that higher BMI groups would account for a growing proportion of operative volume over time.

Nonthermal plasma approaches for combating implant‐associated infections: A compendious review

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Implant‐associated infections pose serious clinical challenges. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) modifications overcome this bottleneck in distinct ways relative to traditional sterilization methods. Gas‐phase plasmas generate highly energetic species, UV radiation and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS), which alter the implant surface properties.

The Influence of Stem Design and Fixation Methods on the Lifetime of Total Hip Replacement

open access: yes
Total hip replacement is one of the most common surgical procedures performed both in the UK and worldwide, with aseptic loosening cited as the primary reason for revision.

Mortality, morbidity, and 1-year outcomes of primary elective total hip arthroplasty.

open access: yes, 2002
No representative data exist on the risks of adverse outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in the United Kingdom. A prospective observational study of unselected THA operations was carried out in 5 U.K. regions. Adverse outcomes were assessed from the
