Lessons in cognition: A review of maze designs and procedures used to measure spatial learning in fish

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The use of different mazes to assess spatial learning has become more common in fish behavior studies in recent decades. This increase in fish cognition research has opened the door to numerous possibilities for exciting and diverse questions, such as identifying ecological drivers of spatial cognition and understanding the role individual ...

A framework for a low‐cost system of automated gate control in assays of spatial cognition in fishes

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Automation of experimental setups is a promising direction in behavioral research because it can facilitate the acquisition of data while increasing its repeatability and reliability. For example, research in spatial cognition can benefit from automated control by systematic manipulation of sensory cues and more efficient execution of training

A common garden experiment in the wild reveals heritable differences in migration tendencies among brown trout populations

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract We undertook a common garden experiment in the Burrishoole catchment, western Ireland, to test for heritable life‐history differences among neighboring brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) populations that exhibit neutral genetic divergence. Experimental crosses were made using either local females (obtained from a below‐waterfalls section of the ...

How Topic Modeling Can Spur Innovation Management

open access: yesJournal of Product Innovation Management, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The avalanche of available unstructured text data makes it ever more challenging for innovation practitioners (and academics) to extract meaningful insights from such data. Topic modeling can support these efforts and help spur innovation.

Annual variation in riverscape habitat use by a diadromous fish before oceanic migration

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
Migratory animals often face high mortality risks during migration, with smaller individuals particularly vulnerable. This study reveals that smaller pre‐migrants of masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) stayed longer in different riverscape habitats (nursery and transitional), with variation between years, to reach large size prior to migration.
