Efficacy of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Against Diapausing Larvae of the Truffle Beetle, Leiodes cinnamomeus

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, Volume 149, Issue 7, Page 1105-1108, August 2025.
ABSTRACT The truffle beetle, Leiodes cinnamomeus, is the most important pest in black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) plantations. Adults and mycophagous larvae are active during autumn and winter, while diapausing larvae are not. Previous laboratory studies demonstrated the high virulence of the entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) Heterorhabditis ...

Fluralaner treatment of chickens kills the southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 39, Issue 2, Page 385-392, June 2025.
Chickens treated with fluralaner, fenbendazole or ivermectin did not repel Culex quinquefasciatus from feeding. The mortality of Culex quinquefasciatus feeding on fluralaner‐treated chickens was significantly higher than that of those fed on control chickens at 3 and 7 days post‐treatment.

Diversity of lice and flea‐ and lice‐borne pathogens in free‐ranging dogs in Uzbekistan

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 216-222, March 2025.
Lice (Trichodectes canis, Linognathus africanus and Bovicola bovis) and fleas were collected from dogs across five regions of Uzbekistan and subjected to molecular analysis. Molecular screening detected Dipylidium caninum and Bartonella spp. in fleas, while Rickettsia spp. were identified in both fleas and lice.

Metagenomic analysis of the gut microbiota of hooded cranes (Grus monacha) on the Izumi plain in Japan

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 14, Issue 12, Page 1972-1984, December 2024.
We analyzed metagenomic sequencing data obtained from fecal samples of hooded cranes and wild ducks that winter on the Izumi Plain in Japan. Various organisms were identified in each sample, and their diversity differs between the crane and duck groups, suggesting that these two bird species may have distinct gut microbiota.

Another tool in the toolbox: Aphid‐specific Wolbachia protect against fungal pathogens

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 26, Issue 11, November 2024.
Wolbachia infected more than 80% of Pentalonia aphids sampled across the Hawaiian Islands and other locations. The aphid‐specific M‐supergroup strains of this symbiont protected against a specialist fungal pathogen, Pandora, but not the generalist pathogen Beauveria or the parasitoid Aphidius colemanii.
