Faecal microbiome, gastrointestinal integrity, inflammation and thermoregulation in recent exertional heat illness patients and matched controls

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota and GI barrier integrity are hypothesised to contribute to exertional heat illness (EHI) aetiology. We compared the faecal microbiome, GI barrier integrity, inflammation and thermoregulation of 29 recent (∼4 months) EHI patients (a group with elevated EHI risk) and 29 control individuals without prior EHI ...

Prognostic value of blood lactate levels in predicting cardiac adverse events in patients presenting with drug intoxication

open access: yesHong Kong Journal of Emergency Medicine, Volume 32, Issue 4, August 2025.
Abstract Background Acute drug intoxication (ADI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, often leading to complications such as cardiac adverse events (CAEs). Lactate levels are widely used to indicate anaerobic metabolism and hypoperfusion, with known prognostic values in various clinical settings.

An Extremely Rare Cause of Rhabdomyolysis: Emery Dreifuss Syndrome

open access: yesBagcilar Medical Bulletin

Association between joint dislocation and malignant hyperthermia

open access: yesAnaesthesia Reports, Volume 13, Issue 2, July‐December 2025.
Summary Malignant hyperthermia is a potentially fatal autosomal dominant hypermetabolic pharmacogenetic syndrome resulting from altered intracellular calcium dynamics in skeletal muscle, triggered by halogenated anaesthetics and suxamethonium. Current evidence suggests a degree of association between malignant hyperthermia and joint dislocations.

Screening for Life: Perspectives From Adult Metabolic Specialists on Newborn Screening for Inherited Metabolic Diseases

open access: yesJournal of Inherited Metabolic Disease, Volume 48, Issue 4, July 2025.
ABSTRACT The number of inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) in newborn screening (NBS) programs has increased significantly in the past decades. For some of the IMDs included in NBS (e.g., tyrosinemia type I), there are clear and substantial health benefits of NBS, while for others (e.g., very long chain acyl CoA dehydrogenase deficiency and 3 ...
