Evolution of bird sex chromosomes: a cytogenomic approach in Palaeognathae species. [PDF]
Background Different patterns of sex chromosome differentiation are seen in Palaeognathae birds, a lineage that includes the ratites (Struthioniformes, Rheiformes, Apterygiformes, Casuariiformes, and the sister group Tinamiformes).

Immunostaining of P450c17, Aromatase and Oestrogen Receptor Alpha in Germ and Somatic Cells During Gonadal Development in Greater Rhea. [PDF]
ABSTRACT The greater rhea (Rhea americana), the largest bird species in South America, has significant economic value due to its meat, eggs, leather, feathers and oil. However, its lack of external sexual dimorphism poses challenges for reproductive management and breeding programmes.

An integrative, peer-reviewed and open-source cooperative-breeding database (Co-BreeD). [PDF]
Co‐BreeD is the first updatable and open‐source database dedicated to cooperative breeding. It enables continuous, non‐binary measurement of cooperative breeding, transforming how we study breeding systems across taxa. Further, by linking biological estimates to their exact sampling location and period, it allows for unprecedented accuracy in the ...

Spatial Insurance of Distinct Ecological Functions. [PDF]
We present a new trait‐based framework to quantify spatial functional insurance of distinct ecological functions amongst ecological communities. We identify communities that disproportionately insure (functional sources) or depend on (functional sinks) neighbour communities.

Hypophosphatemic Rickets in Rheas (Rhea americana) [PDF]
Rickets was diagnosed in 11 rheas from four flocks in Ohio. At necropsy, birds had pliable bones with prominent valgus or varus deformation of the femoral bone and/or the tibiotarsal bone, marked thickening of the metaphyseal plates, and frequent fractures.

Gastrointestinal parasites in greater rheas (Rhea americana) and lesser rheas (Rhea pennata) from Argentina [PDF]
Few data exist on the parasites of ratites, especially from regions within their natural range. It is only recently that extensive studies on the parasites of ostriches (Struthio camelus) have been published, mainly from European countries where commercial farming has expanded.
