Presence of land-plants on a volcanic island in a Devonian Sea (Rhenish Mountains, West Germany)
Review of Palaeobotany and Palynology, 1988Abstract Remains of land-plants have been found in parautochthonous position in volcaniclastic sediments of the Middle Devonian of the Lahn syncline (Rhenish Mountains). These sediments resulted from the interaction of volcanic activity, littoral erosion and reef building.

The isochronous, mid-Brigantian (latest Visean) Actinopteria Black Shale is intercalated in between upper Visean calciturbidites within the northern part of the Rhenish Mountains (Germany). It shows characteristic mass-occurrences of the eponymous bivalve Ptychopteria (Actinopteria) lepida (Goldfuss).

AbstractThe Viséan (Carboniferous) sedimentary succession of the basinal Kulm facies (Rhenish Mountains) was investigated in detail in order to achieve a high‐resolution stratigraphic subdivision and correlation. Additionally, the ranges of fossil index taxa (ammonoids), fossil marker beds, volcaniclastic horizons and sedimentary features (e.g.

Abstract The spatial extent of metal contamination caused by small-scale ore veins is increased by periglacial solifluction. Our objectives were (1) to examine the spatial distribution of Pb in cover beds that migrated over Pb ore veins, (2) to calculate the transport distance of ore-derived Pb, and (3) to determine controls on the transport distance.

The distribution, thickness and composition of the floodplain sediments in the valleys of the Gelbach (Lower Westerwald) and Große Nister (Upper Westerwald) depend on the occurrence of loessic periglacial cover beds in their catchments as well as on historical land use.

Since the Oligocene, the Hunsriick was uplifted about 200–250 m, in relation to the Rheinhessen Plateau (Mayence Basin), and tilted southwards with amounts of up to 50 m. The plateau uplift includes parts of the Saar-Nahe Basin. The quaternary partial uplift does not exceed 40–50 m.
