Ultrastructure of the ampullae of Lorenzini of Aptychotrema rostrata (Rhinobatidae)

Zoomorphology, 2008
Small epidermal pores of the electrosensory ampullae of Lorenzini located both ventrally and dorsally on the disk of Aptychotrema rostrata (Shaw and Nodder, 1794) open to jelly-filled canals, the distal end of which widens forming an ampulla that contains 6 ± 0.7 alveolar bulbs (n = 13).

Reproductive biology of the guitarfish Rhinobatos hynnicephalus (Batoidea: Rhinobatidae) in Ariake Bay, Japan

Environmental Biology of Fishes, 2009
Size at sexual maturity, reproductive cycle, and fecundity of the guitarfish, Rhinobatos hynnicephalus, were examined in Ariake Bay, Japan. Females reached sexual maturity at a larger size than males [total length (TL) at 50% sexual maturity: males, 431 mm; females, 476 mm]. Monthly gonadosomatic indices of males decreased abruptly from July to August.

Rhinobatos austini n. sp., a new species of guitarfish (Rhinopristiformes: Rhinobatidae) from the Southwestern Indian Ocean

Zootaxa, 2017
Rhinobatos austini sp. n. is described from the southwestern Indian Ocean based on four specimens collected from the KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa and from Mozambique. The new species, with one exception, can be distinguished from all other members of this genus by a prominent teardrop-shaped dark blotch on the ventral surface of its snout.

Vasodilator mechanisms in the dorsal aorta of the giant shovelnose ray, Rhinobatus typus (Rajiformes; Rhinobatidae)

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Molecular & Integrative Physiology, 2004
This study investigated the nature of vasodilator mechanisms in the dorsal aorta of the giant shovelnose ray, Rhinobatus typus. Anatomical techniques found no evidence for an endothelial nitric oxide synthase, but neural nitric oxide synthase was found to be present in the perivascular nerve fibres of the dorsal aorta and other arteries and veins using

A hermaphrodite guitarfish, Rhinobatos horkelii (Müller & Henle, 1841) (Rajiformes: Rhinobatidae), from southern Brazil

2007
A specimen of R. horkelii possessing female gonads and claspers was found in the southern Brazil coast. The specimen had total length and weight of an adult but, by the morphology of its gonoduct and claspers, the ray could be unable to reproduce.
