Two thirds of species in a global shark fin trade hub are threatened with extinction: Conservation potential of international trade regulations for coastal sharks

open access: yesConservation Letters, Volume 15, Issue 5, September/October 2022., 2022
Abstract One third of chondrichthyan species (sharks, rays, and chimeras) are threatened with extinction, mainly due to unsustainable fishing. Large accessible international markets for meat and luxury products like dried fins can help drive overfishing by encouraging targeted capture or retention of high‐value export species.

Spatially explicit risk assessment of marine megafauna vulnerability to Indian Ocean tuna fisheries

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 23, Issue 5, Page 1180-1201, September 2022., 2022
Abstract By‐catch is the most significant direct threat marine megafauna face at the global scale. However, the magnitude and spatial patterns of megafauna by‐catch are still poorly understood, especially in regions with very limited monitoring and expanding fisheries.

Fishers' tales—Impact of artisanal fisheries on threatened sharks and rays in the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 4, Issue 7, July 2022., 2022
Abstract Increasing fishing pressure has negatively impacted elasmobranch populations globally. Despite high levels of historical and current fishing pressure, the Bay of Bengal region remains data‐poor. Focusing on Bangladesh, we conducted a socio‐ecological study to characterize elasmobranch fisheries and evaluate their impact on threatened species ...

First recorded case of leucism in the velvet belly lantern shark Etmopterus spinax (Squaliformes: Etmopteridae)

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ichthyology, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 455-461, July 2022., 2022
Abstract The capture of a female specimen of the velvet belly lantern shark Etmopterus spinax with abnormal skin coloration is reported. The specimen was captured off northern Spain (Bay of Biscay, North‐eastern Atlantic) in 2021 by bottom trawling. The lack of dermal melanophores combined with a normal retinal pigmentation, lead us to considerate the ...

Offshore platforms as novel ecosystems: A case study from Australia’s Northwest Shelf

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 2, February 2022., 2022
We assessed the marine communities at the Wandoo offshore oil platform in northwest Australia, and compared these communities with natural habitats. We found that the marine community at Wandoo more closely resembles that of a natural reef than the community that would have been present prior to the installation of the platform. The Wandoo platform can

Drivers of reef fish assemblages in an upwelling region from the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 98, Issue 4, Page 1074-1090, April 2021., 2021
Abstract Reef fish assemblages are exposed to a wide range of anthropogenic threats as well as chronic natural disturbances. In upwelling regions, for example, there is a seasonal influx of cool nutrient‐rich waters that may shape the structure and composition of reef fish assemblages.

First record of a single-clasper specimen of Pseudobatos percellens (Elasmobranchii: Rhinopristiformes: Rhinobatidae) from the Caribbean Sea, Venezuela [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, 2018
Documented cases of abnormalities in elasmobranchs worldwide are more often reported for sharks than their close relatives, the skates and rays. This report confirms the occurrence of a chola guitarfish, Pseudobatos percellens (Walbaum, 1792), caught off

A Neoselachian shark from the non-marine Wessex Formation (Wealden Group: early Cretaceous, Barremian) of the Isle of Wight, southern England [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Bulk screening of Early Cretaceous (Barremian) Wessex Formation strata exposed on the south-east coast of the Isle of Wight, southern England, has resulted in the recovery of neoselachian shark teeth referred to the scyliorhinid Palaeoscyllium. These are

A regionally scalable habitat typology for assessing benthic habitats and fish communities: Application to New Caledonia reefs and lagoons

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 10, Issue 14, Page 7021-7049, July 2020., 2020
A methodology producing a scalable habitat proxy for ecological assessment and predicting habitat with a high confidence level. Applied to a unique set of in situ video monitoring observations, entailing image‐based display of habitats for science uptake. First application of supervised classification rules in ecology.
