Macroalgae associated with aerial roots of Rhizophora manglein Islas del Rosario, Colombia, Southwestern Caribbean

open access: yesCaldasia, 2020
The roots of the red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle, provide a nursery habitat for many species, due to the tridimensional structure they provide, which delimits an area difficult to access to large predators.

Density Estimates of Endangered Endemic Rodents Suggest Broader Impacts of Invasive Burmese Pythons Following a Category 4 Hurricane in the Florida Keys

open access: yesBiological Diversity, Volume 3, Issue 2, Page 88-98, June 2026.
Density estimates of two endangered rodent subspecies, endemic to Key Largo, Florida, USA. These findings illustrate the contrasting dynamics of two native species associated with the prevalence of invasive Burmese pythons and global change. The woodrats' decline emphasizes its potential risk of extinction as global change continues to impact island ...

Epigenetic Aging in Brain Tissue of the Self‐Fertilizing Vertebrate, Kryptolebias marmoratus

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, June 2026.
Using the self‐fertilizing vertebrate Kryptolebias marmoratus, we developed an epigenetic clock from brain tissue that predicts chronological age with high accuracy, demonstrating that DNA methylation changes consistently with age even in the near absence of genetic variation. The 40 age‐associated CpG sites identified map to genes with conserved roles

ANILLOS ANUALES Y CLIMA EN RHIZOPHORA MANGLE L. DE LA BAHÍA DE CISPATÁ, COLOMBIA ANNUAL GROWTH RINGS AND CLIMATE IN RHIZOPHORA MANGLE L. FROM THE CISPATÁ BAY, COLOMBIA

Hydrological seasonality shapes microbial biomass and diversity in an equatorial estuarine mangrove

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 71, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Mangroves are pantropical marine forests rooted in soft sediments and subject to pronounced seasonal variability. However, the effects of these hydrological fluctuations on root‐associated prokaryotic communities remain poorly understood, particularly in underexplored regions like the Guianas.

American manatees adjust their diet composition and trophic niche breadth across different coastal regions

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 11, Issue 3, May 2026.
Abstract Marine mammals can exhibit high plasticity in foraging strategies, but how such plasticity is driven by environmental conditions is poorly understood. The American manatee (Trichechus manatus), a large, endangered herbivore, inhabits marine, estuarine, and freshwater environments.

Morphological, Molecular, and Isotopic Approaches to Termite Ecology: A Mangrove Case Study

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 3, May 2026.
Termite communities in Caribbean mangroves, though species‐poor, sustain crucial decomposition and nutrient cycling. Their overlapping niches and stochastic assembly highlight termites' resilience and ecological importance in supporting the functioning of these challenging coastal ecosystems.
