Polyploid lineages in the genus Porphyra [PDF]
Whole genome duplication is now accepted as an important evolutionary force, but the genetic factors and the life history implications affecting the existence and abundance of polyploid lineages within species are still poorly known.

Production and fate of macroalgal carbon in the ocean: How much do macroalgal organics matter?
Abstract Global carbon sequestration by macroalgae is hypothesized to rival rates in other blue carbon ecosystems. However, quantifying macroalgal carbon sequestration is challenging as it is hypothesized to occur outside macroalgal ecosystems, with 73% of sequestration occurring when dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is exported to deep ocean waters.

How endo- is endo-?: surface sterilization of delicate samples: a Bryopsis (Bryopsidales, Chlorophyta) case study [PDF]
In the search for endosymbiotic bacteria, elimination of ectosymbionts is a key point of attention. Commonly, the surface of the host itself or the symbiotic structures are sterilized with aggressive substances such as chlorine or mercury derivatives ...

Rhodoliths and rhodolith beds [PDF]
Rhodolith (maërl) beds, communities dominated by free living coralline algae, are a common feature of subtidal environments worldwide. Well preserved as fossils, they have long been recognized as important carbonate producers and paleoenvironmental ...

CONVERGENT BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES IN COALESCING RHODOPHYTA
Sporeling coalescence in Gracilaria chilensis Bird, McLachlan et Oliveira produces genetically polymorphic, chimeric individuals. If this is common in red algae, it may have significant biological consequences. In this study, we evaluate the hypotheses that coalescence is widespread among the Rhodophyta and that specific and convergent morphological ...
