Blood flow distribution within the rib cage muscles

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1991
We used 15-microns radiolabeled microspheres to study the regional distribution of blood flow (Q) among parasternal (PS), transversus thoracis, and external (EI) and internal intercostal muscles (II) in nine anesthetized supine mongrel dogs. We measured Q (ml.min-1.100 g-1) in each intercostal space (ICS) during spontaneous breathing, inspiratory ...

Dissociation between diaphragmatic and rib cage muscle fatigue

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1988
To assess rib cage muscle fatigue and its relationship to diaphragmatic fatigue, we recorded the electromyogram (EMG) of the parasternal intercostals (PS), sternocleidomastoid (SM), and platysma with fine wire electrodes and the EMG of the diaphragm (DI) with an esophageal electrode.

Osteomyelitis of the rib cage by Aspergillus flavus

Revista Iberoamericana de Micología, 2019
Aspergillus osteomyelitis of the ribs is relatively uncommon. It is a debilitating and severe form of invasive aspergillosis.A 61year-old female presented with spontaneous chest pain on the right side of the rib cage and a palpable soft-tissue mass. FDG-PET/CT scan identified activity in the infected site.

Rib Cage Deformity in Neonatal Hyperparathyroidism

Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, 1983
Sir .—We were very interested in the article, "Neonatal Primary Hyperparathyroidism in Familial Hypocalciuric Hypercalcemia," by Matsuo et al (Journal1982;136:728-731), particularly by the initial finding of respiratory distress contributed by rib cage deformity.

Sarcomatous Degeneration in Fibrous Dysplasia of the Rib Cage

The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, 2013
Malignant degeneration in fibrous dysplasia is a rare occurrence. Most cases are reported in polyostotic fibrous dysplasia with predisposition of the femur, tibia, maxilla, and mandible. The most commonly observed malignant tumors are osteosarcoma, fibrosarcoma, and chondrosarcoma. We describe a case of a low-grade osteosarcoma occurring in polyostotic

Finding the rib cage in chest radiographs

Pattern Recognition, 1977
Abstract We describe a system of computer algorithms that finds the rib cage in chest radiographs. Our algorithms link the dorsal and ventral portions of the rib contours such that each rib is identified and can be displayed individually. In a preliminary application of our system to five adult chest radiographs, about 90% of the ribs were found, and

Thixotropy of rib cage respiratory muscles in normal subjects

Journal of Applied Physiology, 2000
In this study, we searched for signs of thixotropic behavior in human rib cage respiratory muscles. If rib cage respiratory muscles possess thixotropic properties similar to those seen in other skeletal muscles in animals and humans, we expect resting rib cage circumference would be temporarily changed after deep rib cage inflations or deflations and ...

The Effect of Hyperinflation on Rib Cage-Abdominal Motion

American Review of Respiratory Disease, 1992
Abnormalities of rib cage-abdominal motion are common in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but the basis of the abnormal motion has not been completely determined. Although airway obstruction has been shown to be a major factor in causing abnormal chest wall motion, the effect of hyperinflation (which has numerous adverse ...

Rib cage mobility in pectus excavatum.

The American review of respiratory disease, 1986
Pectus excavatum is generally regarded as a cosmetic deformity; however, some children with pectus excavatum complain of chest pain and exercise limitation. Physiologic studies sometimes show mild restrictive changes and suggest an increased oxygen cost of breathing.

Mechanics of the rib cage and diaphragm during sleep

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1977
The pattern of motion of the rib cage and abdomen/diaphragm was studied in three normal subjects during sleep. Sleep state was monitored by electroencephalograph and electrocculograph. Intercostal electromyographs (EMG's) were recorded from the second interspace parasternally.
