Action of abdominal muscles on rib cage in humans
Journal of Applied Physiology, 1985To assess the actions of the rectus abdominis and external oblique muscles on the rib cage in humans, these two muscles were stimulated with surface electrodes in four normal supine subjects at functional residual capacity. Changes in anteroposterior and transverse rib cage diameters and changes in xiphipubic distance were measured with pairs of ...

Rib Cage Deformity in Neonatal Hyperparathyroidism-Reply
Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, 1983In Reply .—We agree with Gaudelus and colleagues that rib cage deformity is an important clue for the diagnosis of neonatal hyperparathyroidism. The deformity also had a great influence on the outcome of our patient. We now report the rest of the clinical course of our patient and add some comments on the case.

Rib Cage Contribution to Ventilation during Anesthesia
1992The effects of general anesthesia on the respiratory muscles have interested anesthetists for 130 years, and are still not clearly understood. J ohn Snow was the first to report changes in ribcage (RC) and abdominal (AB) motion during anesthesia. In his comprehensive description of chloroform anesthesia published in 1858 (1) he described reduced ...

Rib cage mechanics in simulated diaphragmatic paralysis.
The American review of respiratory disease, 1985To determine the action of the parasternal intercostals on the human rib cage, we studied the pattern of rib cage motion in relation to the pattern of respiratory muscle contraction in 4 normal subjects during attempts to perform tidal volume breathing with the parasternal intercostals alone.

Techniques for the Thoracic Cage and Ribs
1997The ribs and thorax present certain of their own particular problems from the point of view of efficient performance of technique. These problems mainly relate to the variations in shape of the thoracic curve in different individuals and the need to modify approaches accordingly.
