RNA Structure: Reading the Ribosome
Science, 2005The crystal structures of the ribosome and its subunits have increased the amount of information about RNA structure by about two orders of magnitude. This is leading to an understanding of the principles of RNA folding and of the molecular interactions that underlie the functional capabilities of the ribosome and other RNA systems.

Organelle origins and ribosomal RNA
Biochemistry and Cell Biology, 1988As the detailed molecular biology of organelle genomes has unfolded, there has been a general acceptance of the view that plastids and mitochondria are of endosymbiotic, eubacterial origin. Plastid genes are strikingly similar to their eubacterial (particularly cyanobacterial) counterparts in sequence, organization, and mode of expression, and such ...

Ribosomal genes can be cloned or PCR amplified and then sequenced as other DNA sequences. However, the products of the genes, ribosomal RNAs, can be used as template for direct sequencing with the reverse transcriptase as polymerase following a protocol derived from the Sanger’s technics for DNA (dideoxynucleotide chain termination).
