Rib fractures in paediatric patients usually result from static loading (compression) or dynamic impact loading (direct impact trauma to the ribs). In young children rib fractures are usually caused by static loading, while in mobile older children and in adolescents rib fractures are usually caused by dynamic impact loading.

A 73-year-old woman evidencing an abnormal shadow on chest X-ray film since 1993 was admitted after a tumor of the left 8th rib was diagnosed in 2001. Computed tomography showed a low-density mass with coarse calcification arising from the left 8th rib and protruding into the abdominal cavity.

Osteosarcoma of the rib

Primary osteosarcomas arising from the rib are very rare. The authors report an 11-year-old boy with a primary fibroblastic osteosarcoma of the rib, who underwent wide excision and reconstruction of the chest wall followed by chemotherapy. He is disease free after a follow up of 24 months. The relevant literature is reviewed briefly.

Hemangioma of the Rib

An asymptomatic 48-year-old woman presented to our hospital with a tumor of the rib incidentally diagnosed on a chest roentgenogram. The patient was investigated and underwent tumor resection of the chest wall. The pathologic study revealed that it was cavernous hemangioma.

Use of rib belts in acute rib fractures

The current treatment for uncomplicated rib fractures is the exclusion of associated injuries followed by symptomatic treatment with analgesics. Encouragement of deep breathing is also recommended to avoid secondary or delayed pulmonary complications.
