Gasification of rice hulls

Abstract The behaviour of a downdraft gasifier of 30 cm diameter and 140 cm height using rice hulls as a fuel, has been tested. Feeding rates of 1.3–5.1 kg hulls h −1 and air flow-rates of 2–4.44 m 3 h −1 , which corresponds to 26–55% of the stoichiometric amount needed for complete combustion, were used.

Abstract Hulls from waxy (IR29)and non-waxy (IR32) rice had similar compositions. The neutral sugars were mainly glucose and xylose. The major fractions were cellulose and alkali-soluble polysaccharides. Whole hull and its soluble fractions, but not the residue fraction, hardened waxy rice starch gel.

Decomposition was negligible below 200°C, but on heating above 200°C, the amount of volatile matter evolved increased steadily with increasing temperature up to 450°C, where > 90 % of the total volatile matter was separated.
