On the critical Richardson number in stably stratified turbulence

open access: yesAtmospheric Science Letters, 2007
AbstractThe critical Richardson number, Ric, is used in studies of stably stratified turbulence as a measure of flow laminarization. The accepted range of Ric is between 0.2 and 1. A growing body of experimental and observational data indicates, however, that turbulence survives for Ri ≫ 1.

Study of Some Stability Parameters in the Atmosphere of Oil Al-Dura Refinery, Southeast Baghdad [PDF]

open access: yesNature Environment and Pollution Technology, 2023
Wind and temperature measurements at an oil refinery site located southeast of Baghdad city at two levels, 15 and 30 m, are presented. Three schemes are used to determine different stability classifications: Monin-Obukhov length, gradient, and bulk ...

Antarctic atmospheric Richardson number from radiosonde measurements and AMPS [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2023
Monitoring a wide range of atmospheric turbulence over the Antarctic continent is still tricky, while the atmospheric Richardson number (Ri; a valuable parameter which determines the possibility that turbulence could be triggered) is easier to obtain ...

Numerical Study of fluid flow and heat transfer of mixed convection and entropy generation in a L-shaped cavity filled with nanofluid [PDF]

open access: yesمجله مدل سازی در مهندسی, 2017
In this work, the fluid flow and heat transfer and entropy generation of mixed convection in "Γ" -shaped cavity filled with Al2O3-Water-EG have been studied. For this propose, we used from a FORTRAN program based on finite volume method (FVM) and SIMPER

Numerical Investigation of Nanofluid Mixed Convection and Entropy Generation in an Inclined Ventilating Cavity [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Nanostructures, 2012
This paper presents results of a numerical study of mixed convection and entropy generation of Cu–water nanofluid in a square ventilating cavity at different inclination angles. Except a piece of bottom wall with a uniform heat flux, all of the cavity

Mixed Convection from Tandem Semi-Circular Cylinders Arranged in a Vertical Channel [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Journal of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, 2023
Semi-circular cylinders provide better space economy than circular and other non-circular cylinders. The cylinders are frequently used in a tandem arrangement in heat transfer equipment.

Study of mixed convection in a horizontal cylindrical pipe partially filled with a porous medium saturated with a single fluid

open access: yesRevue des Énergies Renouvelables, 2022
The three-dimensional numerical simulation of laminar mixed convection heat transfer with and without porous medium in a cylindrical duct was carried out in this study. The cylinder is divided into three parts. The first and the third parts are adiabatic,

The instability of stratified flows at large Richardson numbers [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1998
In contrast to conventional expectations based on the stability of steady shear flows, elementary time-periodic stratified flows that are unstable at arbitrarily large Richardson numbers are presented here. The fundamental instability is a parametric one with twice the period of the basic state.
