An oceanographic Richardson number probe
Deep Sea Research Part A. Oceanographic Research Papers, 1981Abstract An oceanographic Richardson number probe for profiling the upper layers of the ocean has been developed and field tested. The instrument senses depth, temperature, vertical temperature gradient, and vector velocity gradient. To obtain an estimate of the density structure, the instrument needs to be operated in conjunction with a salinity ...

Richardson's number in the free atmosphere
Archiv für Meteorologie, Geophysik und Bioklimatologie Serie A, 1968From an example of high-resolution FPS-16 wind measurements in the free atmosphere it is shown that Richardson's number is strongly dependent on the scale of the layer over which it is measured. This may be one of the reasons for the discrepant results obtained by various authors in correlating the occurrence of clear-air turbulence with this number.

Surface Jet at Small Richardson Numbers
Journal of the Hydraulics Division, 1973Spreading of a jet discharged horizontally at the surface of an initially quiescent water of larger density has been investigated by several authors (2,3,4). The density difference may be due to a higher temperature of the jet, or a larger salinity of the ambient fluid, or both.

Richardson Number Statistics in the Seasonal Thermocline
Journal of Physical Oceanography, 1985Abstract Statistics of Richardson number in the seasonal thermocline are determined for a simple model and from experiments over the continental shelf. The model consists of normally distributed and uncorrelated density gradient and shear (such as may be caused by an internal wave field) plus a mean shear.

Elementary stratified flows with instability at large Richardson number
Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1998In contrast to the Miles–Howard theorem for inviscid steady shear flow in stably stratified fluids, explicit elementary time-periodic solutions of the Boussinesq equations are developed here which are unstable for arbitrarily large Richardson numbers.

Effect of the Reynolds and Richardson numbers on thermal mixing characteristics
International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 2021Abstract This paper presents a detailed numerical study regarding the influence of Reynolds and Richardson numbers in T-junctions with circular cross-section. The numerical investigation is based on the wall-resolved Large-Eddy Simulation (LES), which has been experimentally validated. The Reynolds number in the main pipe covers a range from R e

Richardson-Zahl Ri (Richardson number Ri)
