How do parasites and predators choose their victim? A trade‐off between quality and vulnerability across antagonistic interactions

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 100, Issue 5, Page 2099-2115, October 2025.
ABSTRACT From blood‐sucking lice and food‐stealing gulls to pandemic‐inducing viruses and egg‐eating snakes: parasites and predators are ubiquitous in shaping ecology and evolution. Fundamental to these interactions is the way in which parasites and predators choose their victim. Here, I argue that a trade‐off between host quality and vulnerability can

Extensive evolution of cereal ribosome-inactivating proteins translates into unique structural features, activation mechanisms, and physiological roles [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs) are a class of cytotoxic enzymes that can depurinate rRNAs thereby inhibiting protein translation. Although these proteins have also been detected in bacteria, fungi, and even some insects, they are especially ...

Landscape of Aeroallergen Sensitization in Asia

open access: yesClinical &Experimental Allergy, Volume 55, Issue 10, Page 901-915, October 2025.
In Asia, aeroallergen sensitisation is driven by climate, geography, pollution, and demographic shifts, dominated by house dust mites indoors and varying pollen sensitisation. Allergen immunotherapy remains underutilised, especially in low‐ and middle‐income countries, due to standardisation gaps and limited access to AIT products, hindering equitable ...

B Cell Activating Factor Does Not Play a Pivotal Role in the Synthesis of Aberrantly Glycosylated IgA

open access: yesNephrology, Volume 30, Issue 10, October 2025.
This experimental study investigates the role of B cell activating factor (BAFF) in the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy using gddY mice. ABSTRACT Aim IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common primary glomerulonephritis worldwide, yet its pathogenesis remains incompletely understood.

The Seasonal Activity of Ixodes ricinus Tick in Amol, Mazandaran Province, Northern Iran

open access: yesJournal of Arthropod-Borne Diseases, 2015
Background: The present study aimed to demonstrate the seasonal activities of Ixodes ricinus at the pasture level and on the host. Methods: A vast pasture in Amol countryside (Mazandaran Province, Iran) which had the potential for a considera- ble number

Similarities between Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes inopinatus genomes and horizontal gene transfer from their endosymbionts

open access: yesCurrent Research in Parasitology and Vector-Borne Diseases
The taxa Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes inopinatus are sympatric in Tunisia. The genetics underlying their morphological differences are unresolved. In this study, ticks collected in Jouza-Amdoun, Tunisia, were morphologically identified and sequenced using ...

Cutaneous eccrine glands of the foot pads of the rock hyrax (Procavia capensis, Hyracoidea, mammalia) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
In order to find correlations between skin gland morphology and specific ethological features, the cutaneous glands of the foot pads of Procavia capensis were studied by histological and various histochemical methods and by electron microscopy.

A new tool for engineering Phaeodactylum tricornutum: the METE promoter drives both high expression and B12‐tuneable regulation of transgenes

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 124, Issue 2, October 2025.
Significance Statement The promoter of the METE gene in the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum is repressed by nanomolar concentrations of vitamin B12. It can be used to tune the expression of genes for reporter proteins or metabolic enzymes and in the non‐permissive state (i.e., +B12) can suppress the expression of the lethal gene, barnase.

Prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in questing Ixodes ricinus ticks in urban and suburban areas of Switzerland

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2017
Background Throughout Europe, Ixodes ricinus transmits numerous pathogens. Its widespread distribution is not limited to rural but also includes urbanized areas. To date, comprehensive data on pathogen carrier rates of I.
