Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 1990
Since the first reported case in 1941, Rocky Mountain spotted fever in humans has been reported from many areas of Texas, with two major foci, one located in the north-central region and the other in the eastern region of the state. During the period 1979-1988, 421 cases of RMSF were reported, reaching 108 cases in 1983 and declining in subsequent ...

Classical genetic approaches useful with free-living bacteria are difficult to apply to the rickettsiae. Although rickettsial mutants have been isolated over the years, the genetic basis of these mutants is unknown, limiting their usefulness. The application of molecular biological techniques to rickettsial studies has provided the opportunity to ...

A comparative view of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi and the other groups of rickettsiae
European Journal of Epidemiology, 1991Recent researches on the rickettsial group microorganisms are summarized in their comparative aspects of morphology, cultivation and multiplication, susceptibility to chemotherapeutics, chemical structure of envelopes, nucleic acid, protein constitution, and gene structures.

Rickettsiae and rickettsioses in Portugal
European Journal of Epidemiology, 1991The only rickettsiae recorded in Portugal till now were Rickettsia conorii and Coxiella burnetii. Boutonneuse fever is one of the most important transmissible diseases in Portugal. Though the annual number of cases is not exactly known, it is estimated to be not far from 20,000 in some years.
