Considerations for using minocycline vs doxycycline for treatment of canine heartworm disease

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2017
Background Doxycycline has been considered the first drug of choice for treating Wolbachia, a member of the Rickettsiaceae, which has a symbiotic relationship with filarial worms, including heartworms.

Effect ofRickettsia rickettsii(Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae) Infection on the Biological Parameters and Survival of Its Tick Vector—Dermacentor variabilis(Acari: Ixodidae) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Medical Entomology, 2015
Rocky Mountain spotted fever, caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, is a potentially fatal tick-borne disease spread from North America to Argentina. The major vectors of R. rickettsii in the United States are Dermacentor andersoni Stiles and Dermacentor variabilis (Say). It is generally believed that vector ticks serve as major reservoirs of R.

Factors influencing in vitro infectivity and growth of Rickettsia peacockii (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae), an endosymbiont of the Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni (Acari, Ixodidae) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Invertebrate Pathology, 2005
Rickettsia peacockii, a spotted fever group rickettsia, is a transovarially transmitted endosymbiont of Rocky Mountain wood ticks, Dermacentor andersoni. This rickettsia, formerly known as the East Side Agent and restricted to female ticks, was detected in a chronically infected embryonic cell line, DAE100, from D. andersoni.

Newer Surveillance Data Extends our Understanding of the Niche of Rickettsia montanensis (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae) Infection of the American Dog Tick (Acari: Ixodidae) in the United States

open access: yesVector-Borne and Zoonotic Diseases, 2023
Abstract Background Understanding the geographic distribution of Rickettsia montanensis infections in Dermacentor variabilis is important for tick-borne disease management in the United States, as ...

Infection Rates and Characterisation of Rickettsia africae (Rickettsiaceae) Detected in Amblyomma Species from Southern Africa

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Tick-borne rickettsioses are considered among the oldest known vector-borne zoonotic diseases. Among the rickettsiae, Rickettsia africae is the most reported and important in Africa, as it is the aetiological agent of African tick bite fever (ATBF). Studies describing the prevalence of R.

Species‐Specific Bacterial Associations Emerge From Stochastically Assembled Microbiomes in Northeastern American Fireflies

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 35, Issue 14, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Many insects harbour microbial communities that can profoundly influence the biology of their host. Yet, the relative contribution of random exposure (i.e., stochastic) events and deterministic ecological factors in shaping these communities remains unclear for most taxa.

Rickettsiales in South America: A Systematic Review of Their Molecular Detection and Distribution in Arthropods and Vertebrates

open access: yesPublic Health Challenges, Volume 5, Issue 2, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Bacteria of the order Rickettsiales comprise a diverse group of obligate intracellular microorganisms that are globally distributed and highly prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. In South America, these bacteria have been associated with arthropod vectors, such as ticks, fleas, mites, lice, and certain dipterans, as well as with a ...

A comparison of super‐resolution microscopy techniques for imaging tightly packed microcolonies of an obligate intracellular bacterium

open access: yesJournal of Microscopy, Volume 301, Issue 2, Page 187-205, February 2026.
Abstract Conventional optical microscopy imaging of obligate intracellular bacteria is hampered by the small size of bacterial cells, tight clustering exhibited by some bacterial species and challenges relating to labelling such as background from host cells, a lack of validated reagents, and a lack of tools for genetic manipulation.

Surveillance of Zoonotic Pathogens in Small Mammals Across Forests With Different Levels of Anthropization in Eastern France

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
The emergence of infectious diseases associated with land‐use changes is well‐documented. However, the presence and dynamics of zoonotic pathogens in small mammals within European forests, whether from rural development or urban greening, remain underexplored.
