Purpura fulminans and spotted fever: A case series from South India

open access: yesJournal of Global Infectious Diseases, 2022
Purpura fulminans (PF) is associated with acute infections such as meningococcal, staphylococcal, streptococcal, and rickettsial infections. However, there are only a few reports of association of PF with rickettsial fever from India. In this case series

Exploring the potential of using male‐killing endosymbionts to induce female‐biased insect populations for enhanced biomass production

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Overview of the mindset and long‐term goals with the approach suggested in this study. We provide a first proof of concept that male‐killing endosymbionts can be used to establish female biased populations with higher production efficiency than populations with a 50/50 sex ratio. This biological tool can have marked positive impact on future commercial

The seasonality of infections in tropical Far North Queensland, Australia: A 21-year retrospective evaluation of the seasonal patterns of six endemic pathogens

open access: yesPLOS Global Public Health, 2022
An understanding of the seasonality of infections informs public health strategies and assists clinicians in their management of patients with undifferentiated illness.

Severe bilateral retinal vasculitis as a delayed manifestation of rickettsial infection

open access: yesAsian Journal of Internal Medicine
Ophthalmic manifestations of rickettsial infections are reported as mostly asymptomatic and self-limiting. A 27-year-old woman, 29 weeks pregnant, recently treated for rickettsial infection, presented ten days following discharge with visual blurring ...

A horizontally acquired pantothenate gene drives vitellogenin's benefit to whitefly symbiosis persistence

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
This diagram illustrates that the horizontally transferred panBC influences the level and localization of vitellogenin (Vg) by facilitating pantothenate production and juvenile hormone (JH) biosynthesis. In turn, Vg shields symbionts by suppressing autophagic degradation in bacteriocytes.

Rickettsiales and rickettsial diseases in Australia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Currently, there are 12 known Rickettsiales species in Australia. However research into the diversity and range of these agents in Australia is still far from complete.

A horizontally transferred bacterial gene for pantothenic acid biosynthesis regulates diapause and reproduction in the spider mite Amphitetranychus viennensis

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
A bacterial‐derived AvPBL gene encoding a pantothenate‐β‐alanine ligase was identified in Amphitetranychus viennensis. RNAi silencing of AvPBL reduced pantothenic acid production, impairing reproduction and diapause induction, while pantothenic acid supplementation rescued these phenotypes.

Five-year analysis of rickettsial fevers in children in South India: Clinical manifestations and complications

open access: yesJournal of Infection in Developing Countries, 2016
Introduction: Rickettsial infections are re-emerging in the Indian subcontinent, especially among children. Understanding geographical and clinical epidemiology will facilitate early diagnosis and management. Methodology: Children aged

Vaccine Design and Vaccination Strategies against Rickettsiae

open access: yesVaccines, 2021
Rickettsioses are febrile, potentially lethal infectious diseases that are a serious health threat, especially in poor income countries. The causative agents are small obligate intracellular bacteria, rickettsiae.

Putting Rodents at the Center of One Health Programs: A Narrative Synthesis

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Rodents link human, animal, and environmental health across diverse ecosystems. Rodent diversity underpins both zoonotic disease risk and ecosystem function. Environmental change reshapes rodent communities and spillover dynamics. Rodents act as reservoirs, amplifiers, and sentinels of emerging pathogens.
