Rifampin Drug Interactions

Archives of Internal Medicine, 1984
Rifampin, an antituberculosis agent, is usually administered for nine to 12 months with other antituberculosis drugs or drugs from other classes. A potential for drug interactions often exists because this drug is a potent inducer of drug metabolism. Rifampin causes a proliferation of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum and an increase in the cytochrome P-

Rifampin With Disulfiram

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1972
To the Editor.— Rifampin is an effective antituberculous drug recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration for general use. Users are warned that Rifampin has been shown to produce liver dysfunction. Fleroxacin combined with rifampin

Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Disease, 1991
We determined the effect of the combination of rifampin and fleroxacin against Enterobacteriaceae and streptococcal species. None of the 65 isolates tested by checkerboard assay demonstrated synergy, 12% of isolates showed an additive effect; 86.7% were indifferent, and only 1 isolate showed antagonism. The mean FIC was 1.2.

Interaction of Rifampin and Chlorpropamide

Chest, 1980
A 62-year-old man who had been taking 250 mg of chlorpropamide daily for several years received rifampin concomitantly and had a subsequent increased dosing requirement of chlorpropamide. When rifampin was discontinued several months later, the serum chlorpropamide concentration rose dramatically.

Rifampin and Red Urine

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1977
To the Editor.— We would like to point out an important omission in Berman's article "When the Urine is Red" (237:2753, 1977). Rifampin and its metabolites may color urine, feces, saliva, sputum, sweat, and tears a bright red-orange. This can create a great deal of anxiety for both patients and medical personnel unless they are forewarned of this ...

Rifampin and Pseudomembranous Colitis

Clinical Infectious Diseases, 1983
Isolates of toxigenic Clostridium difficile, the most frequent cause of antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis, are almost always highly susceptible to rifampin. However, resistant isolates exist and have been associated with colitis in both hamsters and humans given rifampin.

Corneal Penetration of Rifampin

American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1977
We tested the corneal penetration of rifampin in four vehicles: dimethylsulfoxide, polyethylene glycol, an ocular lubricant, and as rifampin ointment. We measured drug concentrations in the aqueous humor in rabbits after topical instillation of 1 and 2.5% rifampin according to two dosage schedules.

Rifampin-induced hypothyroidism

Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, 2006
Three euthyroid patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis developed hypothyroidism after the administration of rifampin. We studied 67 patients with tuberculosis. All of them were treated with rifampin. Of the 67 patients, 42 had negative tests for anti-thyroid antibodies (ATA) and 25 had positive tests for ATA. The diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis was
