Rates of erosion and landscape change along the Blue Ridge escarpment, southern Appalachian Mountains, estimated from in situ cosmogenic 10Be [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The Blue Ridge escarpment, located within the southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia and North Carolina, forms a distinct, steep boundary between the lower-elevation Piedmont and higher-elevation Blue Ridge physiographic provinces.

Machine Learning‐Driven Classification and Production Capacity Prediction of Tight Sandstone Reservoirs: A Case Study of the Taiyuan Formation, Ordos Basin

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, EarlyView.
On the basis of core and log data, a Bayesian‐Optimized Random Forest model achieved 92.76% accuracy in classifying tight sandstone reservoirs. A gray relational analysis‐derived evaluation index shows > 80% consistency with actual gas zones. ABSTRACT Tight sandstone gas (TSG), an unconventional oil–gas resource, has heterogeneous reservoirs ...

Depositional Record and Geochemistry Constraints on the Late Miocene–Quaternary Evolution of the Taiyuan Basin in Shanxi Rift System, China

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2022
The formation and evolution of the Shanxi Rift System are topics of interest because of its unique geometry and critical position in the North China Plate. However, it is not easy to delineate the late Cenozoic tectonic processes.

Hydrothermal activity and magma genesis along a propagating back-arc basin: Valu Fa Ridge (southern Lau Basin) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Valu Fa Ridge is an intraoceanic back-arc spreading center located at the southern prolongation of the Lau basin. Bathymetric observations as well as detailed sampling have been carried out along the spreading axis in order to trace hydrothermal and ...

Evidence From Microscopy and U–Pb Geochronology as a Clue to the Influence of the Cretaceous Magmatism in the Diagenesis of Pre‐Salt Carbonate Reservoirs in the Santos Basin (Brazil)

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
Carbonates from Santos Basin revealed U–Pb ages correlated with basalt ages (A), suggesting that they were formed during magmatic events. These events placed hot CO2 in the reservoir, which, when mixed with carbonate‐rich cold water (B), led to thermal convection, enabling the formation of the U contained in the carbonates.

Tectono-Stratigraphic Framework and Hydrocarbon Potential in the Albert Rift, Uganda: Insights from Basin and Petroleum System Modeling

open access: yesApplied Sciences
The Albert Rift in Uganda is a significant geological and petroleum exploration frontier within the East African Rift System. The basin has been comprehensively analyzed thorough the means of literature survey, seismic data analysis, well-log ...

Geology and Petroleum Systems of the East China Sea Basin

open access: yesEnergies, 2019
The back-arc East China Sea Basin lies on extended continental crust at the leading edge of the Eurasian plate. In this study, the basins are described and subdivided according to their tectono-stratigraphic evolution.

Evidence of a Cenomanian shallow-marine carbonate platform in the northwestern margin of the Bortziriak-Cinco Villas massif, eastern Basque-Cantabrian Basin

open access: yesGeogaceta, 2023
Basin margin evolution of rift basins is not always well constrained. In the northeastern margin of the Basque-Cantabrian Basin, a revision of a carbonate succession permits deciphering the transition from synto post-rift phases in the poorly studied ...

Replacement of Ores Recorded by Textures and Chemical Compositions of Sphalerite: An Example From the Furutobe Kuroko Deposit, Akita, Japan

open access: yesGeological Journal, EarlyView.
Coupled dissolution‐reprecipitation of early formed Cd‐, Fe‐, Ag‐ and Sb‐poor sphalerite through interaction with high‐temperature and high‐sulphur fugacity Cu‐rich fluids, responsible for the formation of the yellow ores, resulted in the formation of Cd‐, Fe‐, Ag‐ and Sb‐rich, heavily chalcopyrite‐diseased sphalerite and enrichment of critical metals ...

Cenozoic Stratigraphic Architecture of the Beikang Basin (South China Sea): Insights into Tectonic Evolution and Sedimentary Response

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
Since the onset of the Cenozoic, the South China Sea has experienced complex plate interactions including peripheral plate collisions, the demise of the Paleo-South China Sea, and the subsequent opening of the modern basin. These processes produced three
