Palaeowinds and depositional conditions from Holocene loess in Sweden and Finland

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The nature of deglacial and Holocene wind regimes in Fennoscandia is debated, as is the degree to which wind‐blown loess deposits exist in the region. Loess deposits in Fennoscandia are often relatively thin, discontinuous and less well‐sorted than typical loess, and questions remain over the degree of their post‐depositional reworking and the impact ...

Subsurface Characterization and Petroleum System Evaluation of the Onshore Southern Lake Albert Rift Basin, Uganda: Insights from Basin and Petroleum Systems Modeling

open access: yesEnergies
The onshore southern Lake Albert Rift Basin in Uganda represents a geologically complex and hydrocarbon-prone segment of the western branch of the East African Rift System.

The pre-Sinian rift in central Sichuan Basin and its control on hydrocarbon accumulation in the overlying strata

open access: yesPetroleum Exploration and Development, 2018
Based on the latest seismic data, resistivity profile, outcrop evidence and logging data, the structural features of basement in Sichuan Basin and its control on the hydrocarbon accumulation in the Sinian-Cambrian strata was discussed.

Lithospheric controls on melt production during continental breakup at slow rates of extension: Application to the North Atlantic

open access: yes, 2009
Rifted margins form from extension and breakup of the continentallithosphere. If this extension is coeval with a region of hotter lithosphere, then it is generally assumed that a volcanic margin would follow.

Terrain Synthesis and Authoring based on Iso‐Contours

open access: yesComputer Graphics Forum, EarlyView.
Abstract Digital terrains are central to realistic landscape depiction, yet authoring tools must balance perceptual realism with intuitive artistic control. We propose a compact vector‐based representation that models terrain as nested iso‐contours, inspired by geomorphology and cartography.

TECTONOSTRATIGRAPHIC RESPONSE TO FAULTING IN RED BED ENVIRONMENT USING LIDAR DATA: THE ABU ZENIMA FORMATION SINAI [PDF]

open access: yesGeological Behavior
This study investigates the tectono-stratigraphic response of the continental red beds of Abu Zenima Formation, Sinai using digital outcrop modelling to the evolution of the intra-block Nukhul fault zone during the Oligo-Miocene initial rifting phase in ...

Congo River sand and the equatorial quartz factory [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
A never solved problem in sedimentary petrology is the origin of sandstone consisting exclusively of quartz and most durable heavy minerals. The Congo River offers an excellent test case to investigate under which tectonic, geomorphological, climatic ...

A bristle‐nosed Jurassic ray‐finned fish (Actinopterygii) bears true dermal odontodes on its snout

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Teeth show extreme diversity, including tooth‐like dermal odontodes or “skin teeth” in many extant fishes. We describe the anatomy of enlarged tubercles on the snout of Redfieldius, an extinct early Jurassic fish. We found that the tubercles in Redfieldius are dermal odontodes that evolved independently from those of living species. Abstract Comparison

Facies analysis and depositional model of the Midcontinent Rift System in Kansas, USA

open access: yesThe Depositional Record
The Midcontinent Rift System of North America is one of the oldest continental rifts but rifting ceased before continental breakup. The southern segment of the Midcontinent Rift System lies in Kansas, USA, where the stratigraphic succession and rift ...

MISS diversity from saline lakes of Brazilian Pantanal: Origin, potential of preservation and comparison with examples of the Ediacaran‐Cambrian shallow depositional settings

open access: yesSedimentology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT One of the largest wetlands on Earth, the Brazilian Pantanal contains roughly 10 000 natural lakes, about 1000 of which are hypersaline. In these environmentally stressful settings, animal life struggles to survive, while cyanobacteria form extensive mats.
