Schmallenberg virus: emergence of an Orthobunyavirus among ruminants in Western Europe [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Recently, a novel virus has been identified among ruminants in Western Europe. This virus, the so-called Schmallenberg virus, belongs to the family Bunyaviridae, genus Orthobunyavirus, serogroup Simbu and is closely related to Akabane, Aino and Shamonda ...

Characterization of Attenuated Strains of Rift Valley Fever Virus

open access: yesJournal of General Virology, 1988
The wild-type ZH501 strain of Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus and two small-plaque strains (T1 and T46) derived from it were characterized by plaque size, pathogenicity for hamsters and ability to replicate in Vero cells. Additionally, a mutagenized, attenuated, large-plaque, vaccine-candidate strain of RVF virus (ZH548-M12) was also studied.

Rift Valley Fever Virus: Propagation, Quantification, and Storage

open access: yesCurrent Protocols in Microbiology, 2019
AbstractRift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an arthropod‐borne, zoonotic disease endemic to sub‐Saharan Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Outbreaks of Rift Valley fever have had up to 100% mortality rates in fetal and neonatal sheep. Upon infection of ruminant and human hosts alike, RVFV infection causes an at times severe hepatitis and pathology in many

The origin and prevention of pandemics. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Despite the fact that most emerging diseases stem from the transmission of pathogenic agents from animals to humans, the factors that mediate this process are still ill defined.

Unexpected Rift Valley Fever Outbreak, Northern Mauritania

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2011
During September–October 2010, an unprecedented outbreak of Rift Valley fever was reported in the northern Sahelian region of Mauritania after exceptionally heavy rainfall. Camels probably played a central role in the local amplification of the virus. We
