Alleviation of photoaging‐associated MMP upregulation, prostanoid biosynthesis, and cell cycle arrest with titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and inorganic‐only (ZnO + TiO2) sunscreens

open access: yesPhotochemistry and Photobiology, EarlyView.
Inorganic sunscreens containing the UV filters titanium dioxide (TiO2) and/or zinc oxide (ZnO) alleviated various biomarkers of photoaging in human dermal fibroblasts, at a gene and protein level. The study provides novel insights that observe the impact of inorganic photoprotection through the molecular biology of skin.

Morphology of powerful suction organs from blepharicerid larvae living in raging torrents

open access: yesBMC Zoology, 2019
Background Suction organs provide powerful yet dynamic attachments for many aquatic animals, including octopus, squid, remora, and clingfish. While the functional morphology of suction organs from some cephalopods and fishes has been investigated in ...

Inference and Imagination

open access: yesTopics in Cognitive Science, EarlyView.
Abstract Our ability to imagine alternatives to reality is central to everyday cognition. Our competence in reasoning depends not only on our capacity to envisage the relevant facts, but also on our proficiency in simulating alternatives to them. I discuss how our skill in making deductive inferences depends on imagining possibilities. To illustrate, I

Comparison of conjunctival pedicle flap to corneal fixation strength achieved by Tisseel® fibrin glue, ethyl cyanoacrylate adhesive, ReSure® hydrogel sealant, and conventional suturing with 8‐0 VICRYL® ophthalmic suture

open access: yesVeterinary Ophthalmology, Volume 28, Issue 2, Page 253-263, March 2025.
Abstract Objective To determine and compare the fixation strength of conjunctival pedicle flaps to cornea achieved via conventional ophthalmic suture and three different adhesive compounds. Animals Studied Ex vivo porcine globes. Procedures Following a 6 mm wide 500‐micron‐restricted depth lamellar keratectomy, conjunctival pedicle flaps were secured ...

Regenerator seal design

open access: yes, 1982
A rotary regenerator disc matrix has a face seal with a cross arm and arcuate rim segments joined by prestress clamps to prestrain the arcuate rim seals so as to compensate seal rim twisting or coning and resultant disc face seal leakage as produced by ...

Reconstruction of an orbital fracture in a mare using a 3D‐printed patient‐specific implant

open access: yesVeterinary Surgery, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective To describe surgical repair of an orbital wall fracture communicating with the caudal maxillary sinus using a three dimensional (3D)‐printed, patient‐specific implant (PSI). Study design Case report. Animal A 25‐year‐old Haflinger mare (370 kg). Methods The mare presented with severe chemosis and emphysema of the left upper and lower

Electrodiffusion in cardiac intercalated disc nanostructures alters cell–cell action potential transmission via ephaptic coupling: A model study

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Ephaptic phenomena in a high‐resolution model of the cardiac intercalated disc. Meshed representation of a tortuous intercalated disc that was generated based on electron and super‐resolution microscopy data. Na+ channels (red) and gap junctions (green) are heterogeneously distributed, with additional regions of reduced ion ...

Large-eddy simulation of unsteady turbine rim sealing flows

open access: yes, 2018
Unsteady flow phenomena unrelated to the main gas-path blading have been identified in a number of turbine rim seal investigations. This unsteadiness has significant influence on the sealing effectiveness predicted by the conventional steady RANS ...

Tracing methane sources in shallow waters of the North Sea: Biogenic signatures and hydrocarbon transport near abandoned wells

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 71, Issue 7, July 2026.
Abstract Numerous abandoned wells in the North Sea may provide gas, particularly methane (CH4), migration pathways by penetrating shallow, biogenic gas accumulations. However, related sampling campaigns have been largely contradictory and lack a substantial database. Research cruise MSM98 targeted the abandoned wells B18‐1, DOK 1‐X, B11‐2, THOR and D‐1
