How phagocytic cells kill bacteria: Lessons from a professional killer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
How phagocytic cells ingest and kill bacteria has been studied for more than a century, but many questions remain unanswered. The study of the amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum brings new answers, and new questions. Professional phagocytic cells such as neutrophils and macrophages, as well as free‐living soil amoebae like Dictyostelium discoideum, employ

Unexpected rip currents induced by a meteotsunami [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2019
AbstractA tragic drowning event occurred along southeastern beaches of Lake Michigan on a sunny and calm July 4, 2003, hours after a fast-moving convective storm had crossed the lake. Data forensics indicates that a moderate-height (~0.3 m) meteotsunami was generated by the fast-moving storm impacting the eastern coast of the lake.

Cracking the Code: Which Ocular Symptoms Predict Dry Eye Signs? Insights From a Large International Sicca Registry

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective The study aimed to identify symptom‐based predictors of dry eye disease (DED) signs in the Sjögren's International Collaborative Clinical Alliance (SICCA) cohort. Methods We performed a retrospective analysis examining 16 ocular symptoms (most graded 0–4) and artificial tear (AT) use (graded 0–3) as predictors of DED signs (abnormal ocular ...

Brief Communication: A new perspective on the Australian rip current hazard [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, 2013
Rip currents are strong, narrow offshore flows of water which occur on many of the world's beaches and represent a serious hazard to bathers. In Australia, rip currents account for an average of 21 confirmed human fatalities per year.

Longitudinal Changes in Adiposity After a Youth Sport‐Related Knee Injury: Informing Posttraumatic Osteoarthritis Prevention

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective Youth who experience a sport‐related knee injury have elevated odds of becoming overweight or developing obesity in 3 to 10 years, compounding their risk for posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). To inform prevention strategies, this study compared patterns of adiposity change between youth with a sport‐related knee injury and uninjured youth ...

Implementation of Preparedness Efforts for Rip Current Hazard at Pangandaran Beach [PDF]

open access: yesBIO Web of Conferences
Rip currents are powerful current that flow from the shore through the surf zone and out to deeper waters. These currents play a critical role in coastal dynamics but they are also of significant concern for beach safety, as they pose a threat to ...

Extending Service Beyond Active Duty: Generalizability of Rheumatoid Arthritis Research Conducted Among U.S. Veterans

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Biomedical research involving United States Veterans continues to advance healthcare beyond the Veterans Health Administration. This is particularly true in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), where Veteran‐centric research has uncovered novel insights into pathogenesis, risk factors, and disease manifestations, informing clinical care and research across both ...

Fatigue Crack Initiation and Growth in Nanocrystalline Ni at Multiple Length‐Scales

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Overview of miniaturized in situ SEM fatigue setup and resultant fatigue crack growth data for nanocrystalline Ni. The presented study focuses on the analysis of fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) in focused ion beam‐notched microcantilevers prepared from nanocrystalline (NC) Ni as a model material.
