Phosphorus Retention in Riparian Buffers: Review of Their Efficiency
Journal of Environmental Quality, 2009Ground water and surface water interactions are of fundamental importance for the biogeochemical processes governing phosphorus (P) dynamics in riparian buffers. The four most important conceptual hydrological pathways for P losses from and P retention in riparian buffers are reviewed in this paper: (i) The diffuse flow path with ground water flow ...

Performance of Saturated Riparian Buffers in Iowa, USA
Journal of Environmental Quality, 2019Nitrate from artificial drainage pipes (tiles) underlying agricultural fields is a major source of reactive N, especially NO 3 , in surface waters.

Sediment Retention in Rangeland Riparian Buffers
Journal of Environmental Quality, 2003ABSTRACTControlling nonpoint‐source sediment pollution is a common goal of riparian management, but there is little quantitative information about factors affecting performance of rangeland riparian buffers. This study evaluated the influence of vegetation characteristics, buffer width, slope, and stubble height on sediment retention in a Montana ...

Rappahannock County Riparian Buffer Study
Riparian buffers (land bordering streams) are important zones for maintaining water quality and providing critical habitat. Rappahannock County has a rural landscape that presents the opportunity to record baseline conditions of riparian buffers.

Cost‐effective Targeting of Riparian Buffers
Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics/Revue canadienne d'agroeconomie, 2004This paper develops an integrated economic, hydrologic and GIS modeling framework to examine the cost‐effective targeting of land retirement for establishing riparian buffers in agricultural watersheds. Previous studies have examined the efficiency of targeting large land parcels for retirement or targeting management practices such as conservation ...

Riparian buffers and potentially unstable ground
Environmental Management, 1995The spatial coincidence between riparian buffers of various widths and extents and potentially unstable ground was quantified using a physically based model for shallow landslide initiation and GIS for two watersheds on the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, USA. The proportion of the potentially unstable ground in each watershed within riparian buffers is

Effects of riparian buffer vegetation and width
Crops & Soils, 2017The information presented in this article comes from a long‐term (12 years) riparian buffer study in the middle coastal plain of North Carolina. Researchers evaluated the effectiveness of riparian buffers in removing groundwater nitrate over time and also explored how vegetation (trees, fescue, switchgrass, native vegetation, and a control) and ...

RUNOFF SAMPLING SYSTEM FOR RIPARIAN BUFFERS
Applied Engineering in Agriculture, 2004Riparian buffer system (RBS) effectiveness in reducing nonpoint source pollution from surface runoff can be evaluated by measuring constituent concentrations and flow volumes entering and exiting the system. This article describes the development and precision assessment of a low-cost, low-maintenance surface runoff sampling system (ROSS) in ...

2007
This information sheet explains what a riparian forest buffer is, what they do, and how they are beneficial to wildlife and people. It goes on to describe a three-zone buffer, which is most beneficial for reducing point and non-point source pollution, and some common tree species found in riparian forest buffers.

Groundwater nitrate following installation of a vegetated riparian buffer
Science of The Total Environment, 2007Substantial questions remain about the time required for groundwater nitrate to be reduced below 10 mg L(-1) following establishment of vegetated riparian buffers. The objective of this study was to document changes in groundwater nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) concentrations that occurred within a few years of planting a riparian buffer.
