Impacts of stream riparian buffer land use on water temperature and food availability for fish

open access: yesJournal of Freshwater Ecology, 2018
Restoration of degraded freshwater ecosystems has gained considerable attention in the USA over the past decades. However, most projects focus almost entirely on the restoration of physical habitat or specific water quality parameters, while ignoring ...

Life Under the Snow: Camera Trap Videos Capture Year‐Round Lemming Activity and Behavior

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We developed an automated camera system capable of recording year‐round videos of lemmings beneath the snow in the High Arctic. We demonstrate the potential of this system to document lemming activity and behaviors. Our results show that it effectively monitors lemming relative abundance with temporal precision unmatched by other methods.

Ground‐penetrating radar amplitudes to roots: A numerical modelling framework for mapping coarse root system architecture

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Observations of three‐dimensional (3D) coarse root system architecture remain limited because most measurement approaches require excavation. Here, we combined dense single‐ and multi‐channel 500 MHz ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) surveys with a flow‐guided connectivity framework to non‐destructively characterise the coarse root architecture ...

LANDOWNER DECISION MAKING ABOUT RIPARIAN BUFFERS [PDF]

open access: yes
A two-stage model is used to examine a landowner's decision to use riparian buffers. First, the farmer chooses whether to continue farming or to sell the land for development.

Comparative Delineation Methods and Ecological Quality Assessment of Riparian Zones in the Downstream Ayung River, Bali

open access: yesJournal of Natural Resources and Environmental Management
Riparian zones are transitional areas between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. They play a very important ecological role in both ecosystems. The accuracy of ecological assessments of riparian zones fundamentally depends on how riparian boundaries ...

Comparative Efficiency of eDNA, Camera Traps and Scat Surveys to Detect a Semi‐Aquatic Mammal Across Multiple Catchments

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Monitoring semi‐aquatic mammals is essential for their conservation, but it is made difficult by their elusive lifestyle and generally low abundance. Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) monitoring has traditionally relied on scat surveys, but eDNA and camera‐trapping are emerging as promising alternatives.

Modelling riparian buffers for water quality enhancement in the Karapiro catchment [PDF]

open access: yes
The use of riparian land buffers is widely promoted as a method of mitigating the effects of sediment and nutrient runoff from intensive land use in New Zealand.

Modeling nutrient attenuation by riparian buffer zones along headwater streams [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
"In this study I propose a statistical model, the Riparian Nutrient Attenuation Model (RNAM), designed to quickly and accurately access the nutrient attenuation capability of riparian buffer zones.

Human Recreation and Fire History Shape Landscape Connectivity for an Endangered Forest Carnivore

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Roads and trails can impede wildlife movement, but their permeability varies with human use and fire history. We combined GPS telemetry from 45 endangered southern Sierra Nevada fishers (Pekania pennanti) with smartphone‐derived human mobility data to estimate crossing probability across road and trail segments. Fishers were about 2.5 times more likely

Climatic factors, landscape composition and host plant traits co‐drive fruit infestation of unmanaged walnut trees by the invasive pest fly Rhagoletis completa (Cresson, 1929) (Diptera: Tephritidae)

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
The study examined multiscale factors influencing walnut fruit infestations by the invasive pest fly Rhagoletis completa. Infestation rates increased with fruit size, host tree abundance, grasslands, hedgerows and temperatures, but decreased with anthropogenic habitats and heavy spring rainfall.
